Just got ADSL

Just got ADSL via TT&T. Difficult to get to some websites.sometimes gets them, othertimes cannot display. Email via Yahoo works from time to time.
Is this the usual for Hua Hin or is it someting else?

Fairly normal I'm afraid. One method of solving the problem which has worked for me when my net's being a bit crappy is to route my connection through a fast transparent proxy.

I'll explain.. in the case of my ISP there's enough bandwidth, but their servers are a bit slow at doing jobs like turning www.google.com into 64.233.189.104 and so it takes an age to load and your browser sometimes thinks it aint gonna come, hence it crapping out.

So.. I now use a proxy in Malaysia, which means that my ISP won't have to do much, just forward it to Malaysia and Malaysia can deal with all the work.

Google "free transparent proxy" and see what you get. You'll find some IP addresses (like the 64.233.189.104 that I posted just above) and port numbers (eg 3128). Go to... Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connection -> Lan Settings -> Tick use a proxy -> Fill in the boxes

Try it and see if it helps.

Got ADSL from TOT and it's spot on, very quick and seems to get all websites.

I've got the TOT package as well and it works fine for me. Although it might not always suit a "professional" for speed, I've had no gripes with them for quite a while now. I did have in the early days and they were getting called out fairly regularly. And I've only got the slowest speed/500 Baht a month set up.
Maybe it's got something to do with where you live? I have seen computer experts say before on the forum that the further out of town you live, the slower the connection can be. We're within a 15 min walk of the centre of town. There were also widespread complaints about TT&T a year ago or so, although I think they were mainly targetted at one package - Maxnet, I think it was.

I agree that is has alot to do about where you live, but it is not related to distance. It is more to do with the quality, or lack of, the cabling and sub junction boxes. I live 7.5 km from the centre of town, am on Maxnet basic, and 95% of the time it is as good as my True connection in Bangkok. (which is always as good as it gets in Thailand)

As a comment for people that may not be here all of the time, why is it that TT&T can arrange to have the telephone bill direct debited to a Bank account, but NOT your internet account? They will give you a discount if you pay in advance, but it locks you in for whatever period that you pay.

It amazes me, I saw an article on the BBC last night about a wireless internet system being setup in a backwater African village. Now if Thailand is behind Africa in terms of internet connections which it seems to be then we may aswell start using smoke signals again.

I think i was jumping the gun and after a day it works wel. Speed fast enough, connectvity good. As good as it was when I was in the UK.

Nereus is mostly correct. The physical speed attainable on any given DSL service is a function of the distance between the user and the DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor), the diameter of the copper cable in use, and the number of junctions (reflection points) in the whole path, inlcuding all the bodgy conections at your home. Its all about signal loss over the distance of cable and the amount of induced noise that gets ino the copper, eventaully called a (funnilly enough) singal to noise ratio or SNR. Lay a peice of telephone cable alongside a peice of power cable (for a length of 2 metres or more), pick up tha handset, and listen..... 50Hz humm (or is Thailand on 60Hz) anyway you hear a buzzing. This sort of thing will generally stuff up an otherwise perfectly good DSL connection.

The problem in Thailand (not limited to Hua Hin) is the amount of Inter-Exchange Bandwidth. Basically there just isn't enough, add to that a major shortfall in International bandwidth and thats why you only get XXXKb/s out of a connection which should run at 2+ Mb/s.

Maybe I can start to address this when I setup shop in HH in a few months time.

Thats all very fancy but you aint gonna speed up our connections unless you can convince CAT to pay for more international bandwidth.

Procyon, well, thats kinda what I was thinking... setting up a LARGE dish for a downlink, using terrestrial services for outbound traffic only (or delay-sensitive traffic such as VOIP {Skype, etc}), and massive kick-ass proxy servers. who knows might help a little

Is anyone else having the following problems? I'm trying to figure out if it is TT&T, a bandwidth (circuits busy), or a local problem with my setup.

I live just past the flyover going south up SOI 116. I've had TT&T ADSL here for over a year and at first it worked well. A few months ago I started getting a lot of those standard internet messages saying that the site I was trying to access was unavailable. It has steadily gotten worse until now it happens about 40% of the time. It is very frustrating in that some sites are accessable but not most. HHAD is always ok so I think it must be a bandwidth problem with some international server but I'm not sure. It is happening right now and I can get to hotmail, but not my bank, credit card, or yahoo sites. Even more frustrating is that I can get to them main Yahoo page sometimes and log in but I get the unavailable message when I go to access a single email. At first I just rebooted (sometimes seemed to work) or just went away for a few minutes and when I came back it usually worked. But now I've been having this problem most of the day yesterday and again this morning.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I got my adsl off TT&T and it works fine except for the Ragnorok Happy Hours (roughly 6pm till 9pm)....then it runs like an arthritic snail......and Im on a premium package.....

Other factors to consider are

Every time theres an earthquake in Indonesia the undersea cables get potentially buggered (like after the last big one) so all the traffic gets rerouted

CAT restrictions on international bandwidth

Massively outmoded hardware in terms of TT&T and TOT / CAT

Thailand is an emerging third world country......

etc etc etc
