Good question ADW!

Can you be more specific please. You are not trying to lure people to your website are you?

I believe the original post concerns a letter sent by HH Immigration to a guest house requiring the establishment to provide them with personal details of guests, i.e. name, date of birth, passport number, visa status, etc.

Sorry i thought it was quite clear question.

which i found the answer .

seems we are required to report visa, passport and travel details of our customers (who rent rooms).

here is the quote i was given today by the nice people at HH Immigration.

"“The Household – Master , the landlord of the residence, or the hotel Manager of where the alien is staying, must notify the competent official of the immigration Office within 24hrs.â€

That's always been the case as far back as I can remember, panovtours. Every resident at a hotel or guesthouse should be required to register. I assume it's to do with keeping track of visitors by passport number in the case of accident, criminal behaviour etc and also for tax and Immigration reasons.
That would be my best guess - never having run a guesthouse or similar.

Normally when you book into a decent hotel 3/4/5 star they always want all guest details (IE: passport numbers, name, address at home etc) plus one of the guests must supply a copy of credit card for any further charges that occour.

Perhaps they are tightening up now on guest houses etc and get everyone operating on the same system, instead of having hotels requiring all details, but guest houses not needing to comply.

Seems a good idea and way of keeping out people overstaying visa's etc, and god forbid anythung happening like the Tsunami again, making it easier to trace excatly who was where at that time.

Its a nice thought but I suspect their motives are financially charged as usual.

Procyon,
I'd agree that financial/tax reasons are probably the main reason for registration.
But then again, why not? The establishment is a business and as such should pay tax on profits. Most of Thailand seems to get away without paying much, if indeed anything, so as a result public education, health, roads etc etc are not what they should be if they had correct funding.
Over 9 years, I'm trying to remember anywhere that I've stayed all over Thailand - big places and small - where I havn't been required to register. Yes, there has been the odd occasion where it's not been asked for, but not many.
It's another example of the authorities tightening up here and in this instance I don't have a problem with it.

This change was introduced in 2005, before than that it wasn't compulsory for the guest houses to have a Check-in Book where you need to enter the details of your guests and they had to have a copy made for the local police station.

I have a few hotel and guest house website customers in different cities and this is what they have been doing since 2005, so nothing new about this.

It's mainly for security reasons for both the tourist and the hotel as well as the immigration, taxation and statistics.

hi
i must say that in the few years i have been comming that i never had to fill out more than my name and passport number, but the law is the law and it is their country,
all guesthouses and hotels must comply with these rules or around 4k fine issued i believe.

all the best.
