Durian Futures

Post by wenshidi »

I wonder if Durian prices will drop significantly this year? I read that imported chery sales performed very badly in the PRC CNY this year due to the continuing decline in the economy. Will the same lack of demand for pricey Thai durian also impact the domestic price?

It seems that many have already grown rich on the price surges and Chinese demand.

Do you buy durian futures?

It must affect prices downwards I'm sure. China has been the big driver behind the huge increase in demand and higher prices in recent years. I stopped buying the whole fruit itself a few years ago when even the price at Hua Hin roadside stall (poor strains) increased by upto 30 pct.

Sidenote: I know Durian has been banned for decades in Singapore hotels, but over 20 years ago a British colleague with a very sensitive nose noticed the 'aroma' at a five star Singapore hotel brunch. I traced it to the ice cream table, a long way away, my first ever taste of durian! She was revolted by me. :D
Later I bought one at a London Soho Chinese market stall. I had it tightly triple wrapped and took it into a cinema in Leicester Square before heading home. The aroma easily escaped, luckily midweek daytime cinemas are very empty as test-sitting even a couple of rows away I could detect it ...

"Do you buy durian futures?"

At current prices, I do not even buy the fruit itself, just like you!

Maybe it is coincidence but the Ete Muscat Grape Cheesecake lolly was launched just after the collapse of the Chinese Muscat market. The fridges are currently filled with strawberry creations for Valentines, or does that also reflect the collapse of the Chinese strawberry market? Can we expect a selection of cherry products up next?

OTR Food & History just released an interesting documentary on the modern durian industry in Chanthaburi, essential viewing for anybody researching durian futures.

Harvest Season in Chanthaburi: The Durian Center of the World

Looking at the decline in Chinese disposable incomes, it appears that prices will also be impacted.
