I don’t do anything associated with banking on my laptop although it is linked to my email accounts so not sure how risky it would be in terms of it not being protected by Microsoft’s latest security?
In all other respects, my HP Spectre is more than adequate for my needs - I replaced the battery on it last year and that’s still holding charge for a reasonable time and I have more than 50% memory remaining.

Re: Buying a new laptop
3-4 years is about my timeframe for laptop replacement, so I'll be in the market for one in a few months while my existing Lenovo is still running well.
Thinking of getting a more powerful gaming laptop this time and retiring the desktop also rather than upgrading that. Nividia has bought out a new range of GPUs (50x series) this year, so the older 40x series machines are coming down in price ... but as usual, not in Thailand, where they're still expensive.

Thinking of getting one in Japan where they should be at least 20% lower than the Thai premium, budget is around 30 to 35K so its quite a saving.
Has anyone bought a machine duty-free in another country and bought it over here?

Re: Buying a new laptop
I've brought multiple new laptops from the US to here over the years. The key is to unpack it, remove any kind of stickers or tags, and use it a bit, put it into a normal laptop carrying bag and you're all set. The key is to appear it's your normal machine that you travel with.
I've never been approached or inspected, the aforementioned precautions are just to make me feel safer just in case.

Don’t want to tempt fate, but in the many dozens of times I’ve flown to Thailand I’ve only been stopped once and that never resulted in anything happening.

I can highly recommend the second hand markets in Guangzhou. Amazing refurbs at prices you will not believe. Do a short transfer and you do not even need a visa. Let me know if you need specific addresses.

Thanks for the replies, I bought a new DSLR last time I was in Japan and had no issues bringing it back (after I'd used it). No plans to go to China this trip, doubt you'd get a warranty on a Chinese 'refurb' either, though it maybe worth a look at in the future, just for curiosity!

I am not sure that there are many manufacturers left in the PRC these days.
I snagged a top of the line Dell Studio for a song last time I was in town, but even Dell have relocated out of China these days.

Re: Buying a new laptop
Last December I brought back a new Lenovo laptop from the U.S. Downloaded some stuff to it and had it in my backpack carryon. No problems….
