Triple strain flu vaccine.

Monday 8 August, 8am - 12 noon.

Hua Hin Red Cross will have 150 shots of the triple strain flu vaccination available next Monday morning free of charge.

This is only for Thai citizens who fall into one of the specified groups (age over 65, various health conditions, etc).

If you know someone who may benefit you could suggest they phone the Red Cross on 032 511 024 to check details.

What is the latest on getting a flu jab in Hua Hin, any local clinics offering them? Would rather use a clinic than sit around for hours in the hospital where you're likely to catch something!

I wouldn't usually bother with these things (and have never had one before), but we've got an upcoming road trip somewhere cold where there is a reported influenza outbreak at the moment, and I'd hate to spoil the trip by being ill.

Thanks, more than double the price of our local hospital though ... so maybe waiting wouldn't be so bad!

Is this a good time to have the shot in Thailand? I thought it was more around May/June. What you'd most likely get here will be old stock, and aimed at last year's expected strains.

450 baht in the local hospital. We don't need the jabs for Thailand, we're going overseas to somewhere cold where there is an outbreak at the moment.

Yes, but my point is, I thought flu jabs were made for the expected virus in the coming year in a particular area, so buying a jab here might be for the wrong strain of flu elsewhere.

Possible, I've never had one so pretty clueless on them, it was mrs' idea.

If it is the wrong strain, it probably won't do any harm :D

That's right - the flu vaccines are different for the Southern hemisphere and the Northern hemisphere. Although they do contain antigens for the same major strains of flu: influenza A(H1N1), influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B/Victoria, the specific sub-strains tend to be different, both by hemisphere and by year.

So there will be some cross-immunity but you probably won't get quite the same level of efficacy as if you'd had the vaccine tailored specifically for the hemisphere you're travelling in.

We're getting lots of "mai mees" from local hospitals and clinics on flu shots, so it looks like you're right, they're only sold at certain times of the year here (or they've run out). Looks like we have to pay the BKH premium or take the risk without one.

I've had flu-like symptoms for most of this week anyway so maybe have already built up some immunity!

It was recommended earler and is part of BKH so prices are premium, but it doesn't look like we have a choice.

950฿ is only slightly more than I paid at a public hospital. The bonus being there will be no waiting.
