Baked Beans

I've been a Heinz bb fan most of my life. I tried Branston's a couple of years ago and found them far superior to Heinz. Their bb with sausages are also good.

Well, when I lived in New Malden, on the London Surrey borders, it was the only supermarket on the High Street. For anything else, I had to get on the A3 or go into Kingston, which I didn't always want to do. Although on my way home from work, I could do a swift diversion to an ASDA, which I frequently did.

When I moved to the sticks, there was a small Somerfield in Hungerford, which morphed into a small Tesco, and was pretty limited for an intended big shop. So when I went in the opposite direction, to Wantage to have a look, and discovered they had a huge Sainsbury's and a decent size Waitrose, and no other supermarket, that gave me far better options than the small Tesco. If I wanted to go elsewhere, it was either a longer trip to Newbury, or Swindon, which did have the biggest ASDA I have ever been in.

It's a hard life out in the sticks with no reguar transport, you know. Once a week, a local private bus company did a trip to Wantage, which was always full of locals, to do their shopping.

Yes, I haven`t lived in Nottingham since the nineties but at that time we used to drive to a Morrisons in Newark.
Back on topic, I`m happy with the Ayam brand beans in Asia, I used to get them when I was working in Indonesia.

We never had a Waitrose in Nottingham, too far north I suppose!

^There could well be one in Nottingham now, I haven't lived there for many years!
All this talk of baked beans has aroused some long dormant taste buds and after my morning coffee and croissant ( and free wifi ),
I'm going to go to the supermarket and see what beans they have here in Luxembourg for lunch.

Several times a week as a child, followed by the delights of 60s-70s boarding school food, hence my sophisticated adult palate ...

I've just had my 'beans on toast' for lunch in Luxembourg and enjoyed it immensely.
It being Sunday, there was only a small supermarket open with their own brand beans but I added some tomato puree and seasoning to the sauce and they tasted fine on wholegrain toast.

When I moved to Germany to work in the late 70's, there was no such thing as baked beans - so I bought tins of white beans and concoted my own sauce - not rocket science and can suit to your own specific taste.......

When I moved to Germany to work in the late 70's, there was no such thing as baked beans - so I bought tins of white beans and concoted my own sauce - not rocket science and can suit to your own specific taste.......

Have to agree there - as a minimum I normally add a bit of salt and black pepper and depending on brand maybe a few other accompaniments.

Nothing wrong with a bit of 'mix and match' we used to have baked beans with Wall's sausages, or sometimes mixed with a can of Tom Piper's Irish Stew (could have been Libby's green peas, though. Memory is going South these days)

I´ve done that many times in the past as well, you can still buy tins of plain white beans here and an advantage of is that you can make the sauce without the sweet taste of some tinned baked beans.

Never mind beans, I seem to have opened a can of worms with my little jest!
(I usually add salt and pepper, and sometimes a little vinegar.)
