An Evening with Emile Heskey

Post by Big Boy »

Amazing - one of my son's childhood heroes is coming to Tonic & Ginger tomorrow evening 15 Oct @ 7pm. I never really rated the guy as a footballer, but I guess we'll be going.

Like you, I never rated him very highly as a player (I remember him missing far more goals playing for England than he scored) but I’m sure he’ll have plenty of interesting stories to recall.

I've just been reading about the visit. He was part of the Battle of the Reds match that took place at Supachalasai yesterday. The match ended with the Red Devils winning 4-1, with goals from Lee Sharpe, Danny Webber, Keith Gillespie, and Dwight Yorke. Liverpool's lone goal came from John Durnin.

What a lovely way to spend an evening that was. The venue was perfect - I last went into that building about 10 years ago when they were serving Venezuelan food - it was little more than a run down shack back then. I would guess every part of the building has been replaced since those days. The current incarnation of Tonic & Ginger is quite beautiful by comparison. The best bit - Guinness on tap (plus a Spanish lager (Mahon), which my son said was very nice). Of course, there were very nice prices as well. We didn't eat, but the food was of the 'posh' variety, and looked very nice.

The event had received less than 48 hours publicity, so it was a cozy gathering, but that didn't detract from the event.

I was enjoying a Guinness or 4, and wondered where my son had got to. I scanned the bar area, and there he was sat with Emile, chatting as if they were long lost pals.

The official interview was very informative. Several times I thought, "That's why." He didn't hold back on anything, and was quite a good talker. Very enlightening on both the club and international game. Of particular note was learning about his relationship with Michael Owen, and how their partnership at Liverpool was formed when they were about 16; and Michael was the one responsible for him going to the 2010 World Cup. His favourite England manager was Sven. He also talked about the hardmen of his era. Mind you, stood alongside him, he was one of the few people in this world who made me feel small. The difference being, my size is due to fat, and he was all muscle. He came across as a very nice guy.

After the interview, there was a question and answer session, followed by a series of photo opportunities. Emile signed my son's England football shirt dating back to the Emile era.

When it was all over, my son sat back down with his childhood hero, and they continued the conversation they had been having before the event. It really was as if all of his Christmases had come at once.

A really nice evening.

Yes, during the evening, he told us he has 2 sons, both on the verge of breaking into the big leagues. He said he was hopeful they would both make it, but wasn't 100% sure yet.

Slightly off topic, but since it is BB's thread. Leeds 3 Plymouth 0.
Marching on together :)
