Six found dead at Grand Hyatt hotel in Bangkok
Six found dead at Grand Hyatt hotel in Bangkok
These deaths were just discovered this evening and it's already all over international news. Are they activists? Is Vietnam taking lessons from Russia? Will be interesting to follow the story as it develops.

At least six people all of Vietnamese origin have been found dead in a luxury hotel suite in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, police say.
Some of the dead were Vietnamese-American, according to the government.
Local media initially suggested there had been a shooting at the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, but police dismissed these reports and said there was no evidence of gunfire.
Local media are now reporting that police believe the victims may have been poisoned, however this has not been confirmed and the deaths remain unexplained.........

We know now that the cause of death of all of them was poisoning, probably cyanide.
They are looking for/interviewing their tour operator.

Asian drug cartels are on the rise, a feud 'hit' would be my initial thought. The scanty report doesn't mention if weapons were found in the room, just no shooting.

Khaosod English seems to be spending the most time and effort covering this story. I would check their pages first during the next few days for story updates.

Interesting report. So are we to assume the others in the room were owed money by the poisoner? And where did the flasks come from? Did the poisoner travel with them, or purchase them in Thailand, as we are told no-one else entered the room once the group were all present. The Thai police seemed to have reached a quick conclusion in this case, without looking too deeply.

It could be bad reporting, but the Post is now reporting the police said one of the dead 6 poisoned the others? Did he then get glasses mixed up and poison himself?

Yes, at the moment that seems what the police have concluded.

This case has been solved in about 14 hours. I had hoped it and the story would have more legs than that.

Well, if a suspected murder scene is meant to be left untouched and as there are no cups on the dining table, it appears that after being poisoned, at least 5 of the victims present placed their poisoned cups neatly on the table by the flasks. If the poison was meant to be more lethal than cyanide, it still somehow gave them plenty of time to do so. Unless the actual poisoner collected them, as you would, before poisening herself, very considerate, probably had to have stepped over a few dead bodies in doing so?
None of it really makes any sense, does it? A suspected debt ridden murderer, who still paid for her own make-up artist to travel with her. A group of disparate people, meeting together for a few days in Bkk, who employed their own tour guide for the duration, staying at one of Bkks premier hotels. They don't seem poor, do they? It would be useful to know who paid for the rooms? and where did the flasks come from????
As an aside, they must be short of staff at the Grand Hyatt, as none of the victims received help with moving their luggage?

A story quite likely to significantly damage Thai tourism to the extent that even the PM visited the scene early on. I am sure suicide by the poisoner and an early conclusion suits a lot of people - no need to look any closer.

I think youre right BB, although more updates have now been provided. Apparently they were toghether to see if they could reach an out of court settlement to halt a pending court case to do with an investment in Japan. Although, I would have thought lawyers might have had a better chance at that? Apparently, they came to Thailand as all couldn't get visas to Japan, which adds to the bizarre nature of this matter. Why not go to Vietnam?? And the poison was cyanide mixed with tea, but in a pertinent commont to the latest BP article, a reader suggests they must have all drank the tea at exactly the same time, as cyanide is quick working, so it only takes one who just might have delayed a little, perhaps to check a messsage on their phone, to see the affect on others and then to not partake. Anyway, I'm sure another update will be along shortly.

This is now international news:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-21/ ... /104117620
Six people came to Bangkok to resolve a business dispute. It ended in murder-suicide by cyanide
When a waiter delivered food and tea to Sherine Chong's hotel room, he could see she was stressed.
The walls of the luxury room in Bangkok's Grand Hyatt Erawan were closing in on the 56-year-old, who was under pressure, in huge debt and facing legal action over a business dispute.
She had been lent hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest in a project to build a hospital in Japan, but there'd been no progress and the investors wanted their money back.
With the parties scheduled to meet in court in two weeks, she'd invited them to Bangkok for out-of-court negotiations.
On Monday, the group gathered in Ms Chong's room at the swanky hotel in central Bangkok for lunch and tea.
When the waiter offered to brew the tea, Ms Chong refused and said she would prepare it herself.
Just over 24 hours later, all six people were found dead in that hotel room, their lips and fingernails black – the telltale signs of cyanide poisoning.
Bowls of tom yum soup and fried rice were untouched, but all six tea cups had traces of the deadly poison.
Police said they believed one of the six had killed the others before taking their own life, but did not name a suspect.
However, they added Ms Chong was the only person in her room when the food and tea were delivered.
long article............................................
With regard to the comment of how they all drank the tea at the same time, I suppose that it had to do with some form of tea "ceremony." It is now being reported that all of the victims were not all gathered around a table, probably indicating that at least some of them tried to move away.
