Howe would have to drop over £1M a year, and Pep would have to drop £14M. Dropping £14M/year would show a real love for English football

Being British Eddie Howe could be tempted, but I doubt Pep has any sentimental reasons for being willing to drop his salary by such a huge amount.

I did see Frank Lampard’s name mentioned too!!

And doesn't that just sum up the ludicrous money in Wendyball and the EPL (and) worldwide? Other sports are screaming out for investment, and yet a single person beit a Manager or Player (the former in this case) commands a salary more than the budget of an entire Professional Rugby Team (for example)!! Absolute crazy money which obviously incurs corruption/illegality by the clubs, management, players, MEDIA coverage and of course the Criminal World in general - not to mention a proportion of the so-called "FAN-Base" that cost Joe Public God knows what through additional policing and damage to private and public property....

Sorry, I shall leap off my "Anti-Prima Donna/Dullard Soapbox" once gain..

Why would he have to drop? They may match his Newcastle salary or even top it.

Even if they wouldn't I still think he takes the job on prestige grounds. Just my opinion

No, of course they can throw more money at it, but will that guarantee success?

The FA is partially Government funded, so we all need to have a whip around and pay a bit more tax. Maybe the politicians should have included that in their election manifestos, and let the British public decide. I'm sure it would have received megga support from the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish.

I've no idea what the solution is but £4.8M plus a bucket load of expenses should be more than enough for anybody. Throwing an extra £1.2M (25%) at it with no guarantee of success is not necessarily the answer. Maybe it could work if there was a give back clause if he couldn't better Southgate's success, which I think must be better than any other England manager apart from Alf Ramsay.

As in any major job, you have to pay the going rate to attract the calibre of candidates likely to succeed.

By all means structure it in a way that rewards success, but it would still require a competitive base salary to attract the right person.

As you have said, Southgate has achieved more than any manager since Sir Alf, and if he manages to lift the Euro, could probably claim to be the most successful England Manager ever.

It’s a funny old game!!

I was spending government money most of my working life, and I can assure you, paying more for something better just doesn't happen. When the EU got to hear about it, we were forced to downgrade even further.

Yes, paying whatever the guy demands sounds great, and I'd love it; but we don't have an Arab nation financing everything.

I’m not sure where you get the idea that the Government provides most of the money to the FA - most of it comes from TV revenue. I’m sure that paying a few more bob won’t be a problem!!

Southgate takes 1/6th of the government's allocation to the FA.

UK Government allocates £30M to the FA each year.

Let’s hope for a good game tonight between France and Spain - France are the underdogs but that won’t necessarily stop them spoiling the party!!

Peanuts
Yes peanuts, but it means the Government have a say in how it is spent.

As far as I can find, the Government have no say in the running of the FA

Well let’s get this subject back onto the Euro competition rather than squabbling over whose right and whose wrong.
