The flight path of an aircraft approaching the runway from the south would pass the palace coastline just over 1km away. I'm imagining this certainly counts as 'overhead'.Nereus wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2024 9:34 amIf you are interested the following may help:malcolminthemiddle wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2024 8:23 am Is there any reason why planes cannot take-off or land over the sea now or in the future?

Caution: His Majesty The King's Palace is off the end of Runway 16. It is prohibited to fly over the palace. It is not marked on the maps, and it is not easily known about this regulation, but it is a very sensitive area that you must not fly over. It is approximately 4 km from the end of the runway on the coast.

Hua Hin to Suvanabuhm didnt work the last time it was tried. The earlier service to Don Muang did work (before the new airport was opened) but that was mainly due to the roads being not so good.
When it moved to the new airport, hardly anyone used it. I was alone on the plane a number of times (pilot plus co-pilot) and even had calls from them on a sunday afternoon asking if i could get the HH airport 2 hours early as there was bad weather expected between HH and BKK !
The time taken to get from BKK airport to Bangkok centre doesnt make it an alternative when travelling to Bangkok. And the time taken to fly there and get bags etc doesnt make it much quicker than using the coach. And obviously more expensive. Great views of squid boats though ! And lightning in the dark ! Not one for nervous flyers.

They wanted you to take off earlier than flight time in your private jet!Jack_Batty wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 5:42 pm When it moved to the new airport, hardly anyone used it. I don’t know whether we can post news items from this source, but it’s a useful update regarding Hua Hin airport?

Wel, as we all know, regular flights were in place to Udon Thani and KL, as well as CM, but they fell away during covid and never returned. I just think that if the airlines felt there was a way to make a profit from flying in and out of Hua Hin, they would do so, with or without renaming the airport or improving it.

At least it’s getting support from the Prime Minister so that’s a start, who knows maybe behind the scenes he and his government colleagues will be twisting arms to encourage airlines to open up new routes?
Re: Flights to/from Hua Hin Airport & other domestic locations
Possibly, Prayut certainly did when PM. He backed the building of and personally opened a brand new airport for a small town in the south, for tourism (forgot name, sorry), and coerced Nok Air to operate a flight. No-one wanted it and after a few months it stopped operating and the airport has remained unused ever since.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2024 10:07 pm At least it’s getting support from the Prime Minister so that’s a start, who knows maybe behind the scenes he and his government colleagues will be twisting arms to encourage airlines to open up new routes?

Hopefully Hua Hin will fair better!!
Re: Flights to/from Hua Hin Airport & other domestic locations
That outlet often posts fluffy articles on Hua Hin airport but rarely any actual news, just rumours so its more like clickbait. They have had popular routes out of HH airport (KL was one) but they get inexplicably cancelled suggesting there are bigger influences at play.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2024 9:00 pm I don’t know whether we can post news items from this source, but it’s a useful update regarding Hua Hin airport?

Re: Flights to/from Hua Hin Airport & other domestic locations
I couldn't agree more. If you count the number of articles they have posted about big things happening at Hua Hin Airport, it becomes obvious that it is little more than a space filler on a slow news day.
They print it because it is what we all want to hear. However, for all of their encouraging articles, all that has happened is the number of flights have increased from 2 a week to 7 a week - all to Chiang Mai
I'd love to believe the stories, but it is only crying wolf on a regular basis.

Re: Flights to/from Hua Hin Airport & other domestic locations
I understand where you are coming from, but at the time, airlines had to prioritise their most profitable routes. BA stopped flying to Bkk, not because they were losing money, as such, but because they could use the planes elsewhere to maximise their profits, so on more valuable routes than LHR-Bkk. Its interersting that now they have returned, everything has changed, fewer flights and not all from LHR.

FFS, I was thinking of flying to Chiang Mai on 19th Sept and return 20 Sept. Schedules have changed - I'd now have to travel 19th and return on 21st, incurring a further night's hotel. It looks like I'm going by car and bus instead!!!
They're back to flying every other day again.

Not a journey I’d like to undertake - Chiang Mai and back with just an overnight stay - unless it was imperative I’d personally opt to stay for another night.
