^^ This sort of thing is national news every day even when only Thais are involved. Unlike in UK, politics and scandal are glossed over because, well, defamation. This just leaves road accidents, petty crime (unless a really serious crime takes over the headlines), naughty monks and what is someone famous wearing today.

Cops up ante on foreign criminals
Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Pol Lt Gen Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. Phuket police have set up a task force to crack down on these foreign criminals, he added.

This is fairplay I guess, but when someone playing cards, teaching yoga, scratching a car, or touching some coral is labelled a criminal and slapped on the front pages of national news to ramp up nationalism it gets very silly. Its the foreign scammers, fraudsters and real criminals that prey on Thais and tourists they should be looking for ... but those doing the looking are probably involved too.

Oooh those evil criminal kitesurfers threatening Thai national security ... hang them!

Regarding the comment above about those doing the looking are probably involved as in “Bent Coppers in the BBC’s Line of Duty”, I’ve been watching a series of the same name on Amazon Prime which investigated corruption within the Met Police in the 90’s - the synopsis of which is where’s there’s crime, there’s money and where there’s money there’s corruption!!

Thailand's foreigner crackdown: police require stricter screening, monthly reports

The witch hunt goes digital ...

British Tourist In Hot Water Over Video Clips Critical Of Thailand
TOURIST Police summoned a British tourist and gave him a warning to stop posting video clips critical of Thailand on social media or else be prosecuted, Naewna newspaper said today (May 1).

Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit Boonyaphen, attached to Mae Hong Son Tourist Police, said video clips posted by the British tourist, only identified as Mr. Thomas, have been critical of both Thai public and private agencies and may harm the country’s image, lead to misunderstanding and even affect the country’s security.

After tracking Thomas down at a house in Mae Na Toeng subdistrict, Pai district, Tourist Police invited him in for a talk to create an understanding and explain that posting such clips risks violating Thai law.

The British tourist was ordered to delete all the clips from YouTube and other social media platforms he had posted.

He was then taken to Pai police station to file a record of this incident with clips submitted as evidence and Thomas told that if he continues posting material that damages Thailand’s image he will face legal action according to Thai law.

Phuket beefs up controls on foreigners after surge in crime
Phuket, in association with international consulates, is ramping up its immigration screenings and crackdowns on illegal activities following a surge in the number of drug-related crimes and foreigners working on the island illegally.

Last year, 194 foreigners in Phuket had their visas rescinded, and 998 faced deportation for criminal activities, mostly drug-related and working without a proper visa, said Pol Col Kriangkrai Ariyaying, chief of Phuket's immigration police.

The province's immigration office now meets international consular officials once every two months, he said. Arrivals must not have any outstanding arrest warrants or be on any blacklists, and they are responsible for proving they have sufficient money with them and a clear itinerary, Pol Col Kriangkrai said. And when they are in Phuket, more measures are now being employed to verify their places of stay and crack down on any attempts to work illegally.

Many foreigners have been caught working illegally as tour guides in Phuket. "If caught breaking the law, they will be arrested and deported," Pol Col Kriangkrai said. "Tourists must abide by the law, or they may be arrested and banned from re-entering Thailand for good."

The public is also being encouraged to help police watch out for signs of criminal activities linked to foreigners in Phuket and report any suspicious incidents to authorities, he said. In January alone, about 800,000 foreign tourists arrived on the island, while the number of foreigners staying there on year-long visas is put at 36,000. Most are operating a business, studying or in retirement.

While Muang district is the most popular location for long-stay visitors, most of whom are Russians, other districts also have their fair share of expats.

Pitchforks and lynch mobs are being prepared again ...

Foreign crackdown pushed
Fears about Thailand becoming a failed state have grown recently because of its failure to enforce laws, allowing cross-border crimes to erode public confidence in the country's safety and security.

These incidents have already affected Thailand's tourism sector as the Chinese market ebbed the first two months this year, as did Taiwan and Hong Kong, whose residents fell victim to scammers.

Business operators have expressed concerns over weak law enforcement in Thailand, including entanglement with corruption, believing it will eventually impact the economy if the government fails to protect the country from crime and similar threats posed by those who exploit legal loopholes for personal gain, such as foreign business using nominees.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/ge ... own-pushed

This government is pretty stupid at times ... they let hoards of undocumented Chinese in with no visas because of their greed for the tourist buck, then flap and complain when they stay and start opening businesses and scamming the locals. :banghead:

Thailand's foreigner crackdown: stricter screening, monthly reports, working raids

Crackdown on expats in jobs for Thais
Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn ordered a crackdown on expats working in occupations restricted to Thai nationals after the ministry made more than 4,400 arrests for the offence in the past nine months.

Labour Ministry spokesman Phumphat Muanchan said on Sunday Mr Phiphat had ordered agencies to cooperate on protecting the jobs of domestic workers while pledging not to normalise illegal employment in the country, despite its prevalence.

The order came after a large number of arrests involving illegal expat labourers, said Mr Phumphat, who added one of the main factors contributing to the issue was employers wanting to cut corners and save on recruitment costs.

Moreover, he also blamed the failure of some legal officers to press charges which worsened the problem.

"While the public's eyes and ears are necessary, progressive working measures are needed to lessen the effect on Thai workers," said Mr Phumphat.

He said the ministry would work with the police and Department of Employment (DoE) to "find, charge, fine and repatriate" illegal workers.

From Oct 1 to June 13, 4,437 expats were found working in strictly prohibited "List-1" occupations for expats, such as vendors, barbers, traditional masseurs, secretaries and chauffeurs. Of which, the ministry had pressed legal charges against 417.

The ministry also found 4,720 expats working in List-3 conditionally prohibited occupations, such as bricklaying, carpentry, construction, agriculture and fishing, and pressed legal charges against 53.

It had also pressed charges against 696 of the 22,414 expats it found working in List-4 conditionally prohibited occupations such as shop sales assistants and manual labour, said Mr Phumphat.

They should be encouraging foreign labourers and builders, maybe with more workers it won't take decades to build or fix the roads here.

It's a weird one, as many Burmese, Cambodians and those from Laos are legally employed doing the sort of jobs that I thought were reserved for Thais - construction workers, cleaners in Malls, working in restaurants all over and so on. My other half gets really frustrated when it's obvious the person she is speaking to in a restaurant doesn't really understand Thai.

I haven't noticed it much here, but at immigration in Korat, it was a regular thing to see someone arrive with a mass of passports to be processed, sometimes accompanied by actual people.

They exist, usually under an MOU. But these are normally only given out to larger (multinational) companies. Catering and such do not really have that exemption. Most are legally employed in construction and manufacturing and smaller businesses on the borders between Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia...

If the authorities could be a little clearer, they should clarify the use of the term "foreign expat" because of the 4400 mentioned above it is most likely that 4399 are from one of the neighboring countries. Maybe also in the same vein do an investigation of the visa system here and make up their minds who they want her outcasts or ordinary people! Personally, I think it is near to 0 pensioners from the western world who have any interest in to even think about working here and abusing the Immigration laws. Just my two cents.

Plenty of non-Thai construction workers in Bkk. Plenty of Burmese and Cambodians working in Hua Hin. And many of the Malls in Bkk are cleaned by Burmese or Cambodians.

It just seems one of those contradictory areas where the authorities will let it pass when it suits them, and do something about it when it doesn't. Or when the locals start kicking up a fuss.
