I’ve recently been watching some YouTube dash cam clips of driving in the UK and believe me, some of what I’ve seen are the equal of what you see here in Thailand. Maybe not to the same extent, but the idiocy of some drivers almost defies belief, coupled with aggressive driving and you have a perfect recipe for mayhem. Despite having all your wits about you, these nutters can catch you completely unaware!!

We just got back from 6 weeks in the states, lots of driving and I would say what you saw on youtube also applies to America. Driving manners, and safety, seems to have gone way downhill since I lived there.

You'll never stop stupid, but do the UK and US still have a deterrent in the form of an active police force? Crime has existed since time began, but is there a chance that you'll be caught/punished?

crime is one thing but some of it is unbelievable stupidity/lack of awareness.

There is an active police force in the states but spread very thin considering all the roads.

I can tell you that in the UK there is nowhere near the levels of traffic policing that I was involved in until 2003.

I regularly see comments on social media about poor driving standards etc. and I often wonder how many of these posters have previously uttered the Traffic Officers oft heard one liner, "Haven't you got anything better to do? You should be catching burglars and rapists." To which I would reply, "If you have any information about burglars and rapists I will gladly pass on the information to the CID who investigate these crimes." :cuss:

My point is that unless you are nobbled by one of the many speeding cameras here, there is virtually no chance of being caught/punished in Thailand for road crime. Even when you are caught, the deterrent is usually laughable.

Driving to Petchaburi last Wednesday, we spotted 3 police officers breaking traffic laws.

It's the Wild West, we need a new sheriff.

I don't think this will polish out. Nobody killed!

The accident in the middle of the Red Light Intersection of Sa Kwan Road 317 intersects with Route 359, Muang, Sa Kaeo, injured 4 people after 18 wheels carrying eucalyptus across the lane, crashed 7 vehicles. The uncle and grandchildren who sat in the pickup survived the miracle.

Geez, unbelievable! Stopped for a piss on a motorway:

Investigators initially learned that the deceased was the driver of the vehicle, before coming to a urinal stop on the side of the road, with the deceased standing urinating in front of the car, but he crossed the iron guard lane to urinate in the grassy hills. At that moment, a blue sedan crashed into the rear of their car 50 metres away, hitting the deceased, the body splattered across Card Lane, falling to the side of the road, injuring himself before the death.
