The biggest problem I have with the road is the poor notice of temporary lane closures on either the inside or outside lanes. You are almost upon them by the time the signs appear and it's not always easy to move over. Luckily, as I I now anticipate this, I pay extra vigilence, and having a truck helps.

Whats the bet that the rebar has been cut during "gouging"?

The old surface had been gouged out. The outer beam of the bridge fell without warning onto the Rama II Highway, he said.

More on the above. FYI, Thai Rath is a wealth of information about various things we don't see in the English language press, and it translates quite well and quickly now using Google.

U-turn bridge collapses repetitive standards that Thai people are not safe

https://www.thairath.co.th/scoop/interview/2461386

"Prof. Dr. Suchachwee Suwansawat , former president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand and former rector of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. Commenting on the accident of the U-turn bridge on Highway 35 or Rama 2 Road, Km 34, Samut Sakhon Province which is being repaired by the Department of Highways After being in operation for a long time since 1993, there was an accident where a 5 ton load beam fell on a moving car. Until the death of two bodies and two injuries on July 31, with the Thai Rath Online News team that for the real cause of this accident should wait for clarity from the Department of Highways that Caused by what exactly? however In my personal opinion, I thinkThings like this shouldn't happen over and over again in Thailand. It is also a clear reflection of that. Our construction safety standards are still full of question marks!

Safety Standards :

What's worth noting about this is the issue of safety standards. The first point is why there is no road closure for repairs. It is still open to have cars roaming around. until the tragedy As for the second issue, it is the fact that the Department of Highways officers fall down with the load beams. Is it possible that This may be due to the fact that during the work the safety standards are not complied with enough.

“The accident happened In addition to working, there should be problems. Compliance with safety standards can also be problematic. This kind of thing shouldn't happen in Thailand over and over again. If it is a country with high safety standards such as Singapore or Japan, do not say this kind of construction at all. Even just replacing a single slab of road surface must be closed to all roads in and out. It also requires officers to report incidents and provide traffic convenience to people.”

Who should be responsible for:

For those who must be responsible for this matter. Standards generally consist of: 1. Contractor company, 2. Supervisor, and 3. Work owner must be responsible for the compensation of injured and dead. If the inspection finds that there is a real fault May be charged with negligence causing the death and property of another person.

Principles of forensic engineering:

“This kind of structure is not a complex one. Therefore, the likelihood of the collapse It happens very rarely.”

Working in this manner, if compared to get a clear picture, is like taking construction materials that are controlled according to the design in terms of size, weight and quality since they are in the factory and then assembled together. Therefore, the likelihood of the collapse or disaster of the structure. Therefore, there is a very small chance of this happening. except there will be a severe fire accident Or the structure is used in the wrong type of work, such as taking a townhouse. to make a factory, etc.

Finding the cause of construction accidents :

1. Is the design correct? :

The first thing you need to do is take a model to verify that. Is the pick-up weight, length, bend and method of calculation correct? which if the design is wrong, it cannot support the weight, it must be broken, which if found that the design is not correct The person responsible is "Design Engineer"

2. Is the construction correct according to the drawings? :

Is the construction correct according to the design, for example, the construction must be extended to receive 1.5 meters or 2 meters, but is it really only 1 meter, or is the amount of steel inserted into the beam exactly as it was designed? in this issue If it is found that the construction is not according to the design “Contractors and supervisors must be responsible.”

3. Use the wrong type or not :

For example, if it is a residential house but is used to make a factory. In this way, the structure that was made would not be able to support it.

However, if all three issues were examined, nothing was found wrong. The next thing to check is Has there been a previous disaster on the structure? For example, has there been a severe fire in the past?

Lifespan :

Former President of the Engineering Institute of Thailand commented on this issue that Although the U-Turn Bridge has been in use for over 30 years, as far as it is known, it has undergone periodic maintenance. come continuously In addition, as seen from the clips shared on various social media, it can be seen that "the beams have fallen all over" in personal opinion, so I don't think this will happen from a lifetime. because if it could be in that case Most likely, it's more of a small fragment falling down.

Later, on the fan page , Mahachai Highway Police Service has announced that the traffic has been temporarily closed in parallel lanes, km 22 + 500, Rama 2 Road, Wor. 24 to prevent falling of the fin or the edge of the Ekachai Bangbon bridge . 3242 km. 7 that runs across Rama 2 Road, which has been coordinated by Mr. Pratpong Meknitkul, Chief of Economic Highway Division because it was found that there was a malfunction of the fin

Most recently at 2:30 p.m., it was reported that Machines have entered the area Carry out the lifting of the fin. It is estimated that it takes about 3 hours.

More bridge danger on Rama II Road (BKK Post version of the above article)

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ma-ii-road

(Good photo of the entire section of the bridge removed that caused the Sunday night tragedy. Photo below)

SAMUT SAKHON: More lanes on were closed on Rama II Road on Wednesday, to allow the removal of loose-hanging concrete slabs from a flyover, while another section that had been closed by Sunday night's U-turn bridge collapse was reopened.

Highways police closed part of the highway on Wednesday morning after motorists spotted four concrete slabs hanging insecurely from a flyover parapet at the 22 kilometre marker in tambon Khok Krabue of Muang district.

Local highway officials said there were marks showing a tall vehicle had hit the flyover. The concrete surface had cracked, exposing the steel reinforcing. The damaged pieces were were removed for public safety and the road reopened.

Also on Rama II Road, Bangkok-bound express lanes reopened to traffic on Wednesday morning after the Highways Department removed four remaining beams on the U-turn bridge above the 34th kilometre marker.

The lanes had been closed since Sunday night when an outer beam fell from the bridge, killing two people and injuring two others. The official investigation is expected to take two weeks.

Highways Department director-general Sarawut Songwilai said officials would check the remaining structure of the 29-year-old U-turn bridge and decide whether it could be maintained or should be replaced.

More bridge danger on Rama II Road
Strange types of slabs to be in a position like that. It maybe some sort of attempt at having an expansion joint, as the deck and barrier will not have the same rates of expansion.

Chon Buri police couldn’t find victim of car crash on back seat

https://thethaiger.com/news/chon-buri/c ... -back-seat

Chon Buri Highway Police rescue team has been slammed by Thai netizens for their slapstick approach because they couldn’t find the dead body of a man who crashed his car. The dead body of the driver lay in the car’s wreckage for 12 hours after the accident before he was found.

The body of 68 year old Pattarachai Auttaporn was found in the back seat of a white sedan car 12 hours after the accident happened.

The accident happened yesterday at about 7am on Motorway Road No. 7 leading to Pattaya. The white sedan car was seen on CCTV cameras hitting a traffic barrier in the middle of the road after the driver seemingly lost control.

The highway rescue team rushed to the scene but astonishingly reported no deaths or injuries when they got there. They didn’t think of looking in the back and believed someone had beaten them to it and that the driver had already been sent to a hospital.

Even more bizarre was that the forklift driver didn’t look inside the car. The forklift driver just moved the damaged car to a parking lot at Khao Kheow Highway Police Station in Bang Phra Sub-district, Si Racha District, in Chon Buri.

The highway policeman in charge of the case, Rattanapon Wanna, said he waited for the driver, or driver’s relatives to contact the police and pick up the car but no one called.

It was only when Rattanapon went to check the car for documents did he find the dead body.

The local news Facebook page Krua Sahapat – Laem Chabang Road (เครือสหพัฒน์-แหลมฉบัง), posted the story with pictures this morning.

The post sparked fury among many Thai netizens who criticized the highway rescue team’s handling of the case.

“How a car accident could happen without a driver? Such a sloppy job!”

“What if the driver didn’t die at the time and he was only very hurt?”

“It’s a careless job!”

“Officers should work better than this!”

The 29 year old forklift driver informed the media that he was asked to move the damaged car at 7.45am yesterday. He brought the car to the parking area by himself and was shocked to learn that a corpse was still inside. The man said he has been working as a forklift driver for 10 years but had never experienced anything like this incident before.

Teerapong Supya, a 34 year old rescuer from another team, called Peaw Teang Tai Siracha, said his team got a notification about the accident too. However, Teerapong revealed that the Highway Department rescue team got there first and reported that there were no deaths or injuries. So, his team cancelled their investigation.

Police have now contacted the driver’s relatives. They revealed the victim’s relatives didn’t question the police about the incident and didn’t want to file a complaint against the authorities.
