Thanks for all the info on the HHAD website and in the forums - Just booked my flights (Eva Air £410 return from London!) and I'm coming over to see for myself.
I plan to be in Hua Hin just three nights to start with, 13-15 June. Basically I want to get a feel for the place and to get my own instinct for Hua Hin, the community as it is now and as it may evolve, and thirdly to see some of the property on sale. I'm considering several places in and around Thailand, Hua Hin is top of the list.
Where in HH do expats meet up in the evenings? I'm a keen musician and artist if there are places such people hang out. I suppose I'm thinking that Hua Hin may become a magnet for artistic and international people?
I feel there are many changes coming for Hua Hin, and want to hear what people living in the area expect to happen over the next few years.
Ciao for now, and hope to meet some of you maybe?

13-15 June visiting Hua Hin
Mike I stayed at the Sofitel 2 years ago and there was a great Jazz bar downstairs called Satchmo's.
Think it has changed name now but may be worth a visit if you like something a bit more upmarket.
Bars to visit would be Crawfords, probably the smartest is Hua Hin, Johnny Walkers Bar (just round the corner). There are many more but they are probably the pick of the bunch.
Plenty of good resteraunts, I liked Monsoon, Tahj Mahal (if u like indian), and a small street place called Bam Bam's (in Poolsuk Rd) opposite the Swedish Bar. Do not be put off by the street location, does the most Authentic Thai Food in Hua Hin and also very reasonable price.
If you like a long walk on the beach, walk down past the Sofitel towards the Big Buddah at Koh Takiab and make sure you stop at the Lets Sea Bar/Cafe, very upmarket but food and service is very good, and has beachfront position. Is probably about 2/3km walk, but builds up a good thirst

Always Borrow Money from a Pesimist. "They Never Expect it Back"
I play piano, bass, and keyboards. And if desperate, nylon string guitar. No, if really desperate, electric guitar, badly. I suppose I'm vaguely Elton John and 1960s, but you hum it, I can probably play it, I started out at 17 playing knees up mother brown (and similar requests by elderly gents in caps) down the Greyhound pub in Croydon...JW wrote:Hi Mike,
What do you play? I would recommend the Gene pub if you lie good rock music, this band plays in my bar occasionally and they are the best we have in Hua Hin!
So JW, you have a bar, and I presume that is Johnny Walkers? Aha! Do you have fresh orange juice? No ice. I'm on a health trip for a while now.
I have to say, Bangkok bands have put me off live music in Thailand - is it just my experience, but I found Thai musicians often have fantastic technique, but no soul. I've heard Imagine by John Lennon played as a happy funky reggae slush, for example. I concluded that Thai people repress their edginess and creativity, smothering it with almost cringeing politeness, lovely people socially, but underneath you never know. And none of that artistic depth and layers of feeling comes across in live bands I heard in Bangkok. Or is that a wrong impression?
Thanks for the info chelsea. My internet research tells me Bindaban is the place to go, and I'll be looking for a guest house near there and HHAD have a map, so I'll be wandering nearby.chelsea wrote:Mike I stayed at the Sofitel 2 years ago and there was a great Jazz bar downstairs called Satchmo's.

Maybe I'll give the 3km long walk on the beach a miss, what is all this I hear about deluges and rain? Is it beach weather or is it rainy season now?
If you were inclined i am sure you could get up and play with the guys. I always think that musically they are good but are let down vocally. We have a few Karaokes here (not pretty by the way).
When these guys play tracks like Hey Joe they mean it!!
You got the bar thing right, JWs is mine, and yes we have fresh squeezed juice daily!!
See you next week.
