I have the time tables in front of me here.
the connections are not good hence Im thinking of doing part of it on the VIP bus.
here are the choices

Sing - BGK flight is about an hour and about 100 US.

The appeal of a nice scenic journey will soon loose its appeal once youâ€™ve been sitting in a hot bumpy carriage for a few hours

Try Tiger Airways for Sing to BKK flights, they are very cheap at the monent. Cheaper than 100US I think

BANGKOK, Thailand: A passenger train derailed Monday after saboteurs loosened a section of track in insurgency-plagued southern Thailand, injuring nine people, an official said.

A 3-meter (10-foot) section of rails was unscrewed, sending the northbound train off the tracks, said Montakan Srivilas, a spokesman for the State Railways of Thailand. He said Muslim rebels were believed responsible.

The train, carrying about 200 passengers, derailed about 750 kilometers (470 miles) south of Bangkok in Pattani province's Kok Pho district, Montakan said.

Pattani is one of three provinces in southern Thailand in which a Muslim separatist insurgency has raged since early 2004. More than 2,200 people have perished since then in almost daily shootings and bombings.

The train journey from Singapore to Hua Hin, although not short or particularly fast, is something that may well appeal to the discerning traveller.
In October 2006, the Hash House Harriers arranged a special train all the way from Singapore to Chiang Mai. With overnight stop-overs in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Haadyai, Bangkok and Sukhothai the trip was fully-booked within days. Most of the participants were full of praise for the experience.
Do not be put-off by the post above this one. A glance at a map of southern Thailand will show that the derailment did not occur on the Padang Besar - Haadyai route. Let the train take the strain. Take a thick book that you have always been meaning to read and relax.

Caducus is correct, the sabotage is not affecting the line to Singapore, but all services from Hat Yai to Yala, Pattani and Sungai Kolok have been suspended until further notice.
