Menu/food prices rising in Thailand
Re: Menu/food prices rising in Bangkok and Thailand
Yes, my daughter who sells Papaya Salad amongst other things has said the same about Papaya, and is grateful she has friends and neighbours who give her Papaya free of charge.
I read earlier today that they were contemplating importing pork again - that will shake-up the greedy gits who are hoarding, and pushing the price up.

We have more than enough papaya for the family. We give the extra away.

Lucky nobody is hoping to make a killing out of the pork crisis.

200 tons of pork. This is probably the tip of the iceberg.

It makes you wonder what you’re really eating when you go to Makro et al, and buy “fresh” pork - it could have been kept in deep freeze for years!!

Quite often on pork we get from Makro if we don't freeze it, or use it in a couple days it goes bad so I don't think by the time they get it it is very fresh! Haven't had that same issue with Tesco.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 12:57 pm It makes you wonder what you’re really eating when you go to Makro et al, and buy “fresh” pork - it could have been kept in deep freeze for years!!
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.
Re: Menu/food prices rising in Bangkok and Thailand
I think that it has more to do with how the "fresh" pork is transported from the abattoir. In the days when I used to take my granddaughter to school early in Bangkok, it was normal to see several open pick ups with sides of pork stacked up on the back!

I don't think it's any real secret that most 'fresh' meat has previously been frozen. That's especially true with imported meats. It's quite safe to thaw frozen meat and then re-freeze it.
Of course the act of freezing reduces the quality and re-freezing will affect it again.
However, it's quite safe and common practice everywhere.
Any meat stored at 0 degrees is safe to eat indefinitely.

They're not kidding about menu prices skyrocketing. We've just had a few days on the road eating out at various places, mostly Thai food. What used to cost around 600 baht to feed four of us (regular Thai dishes, nothing fancy), now there is very little change from 1,000. That's a 40% increase in a couple of years so restaurants are likely to suffer even more if regular folk cant afford to eat in them anymore.

when we were last here in november 2019, back in the good old days,
we ate out at i suppose a dozen or more different restos
5 of them are still open today

Yep, I'd reckon at least 60% of the restaurants were closed/for sale/for rent in the areas we visited down south over the weekend. Doubt many of them will be reopening with the lack of diners/tourists and surging prices.

It’s a double edged sword - rising prices and not enough customers to share the burden. I can’t see any short-term solution, so probably more will have to close down (permanently or temporarily) until hopefully the numbers of tourists starts to increase?

I have been buying BBQ pork from one of those two shops in Cha-am for many years. It has always been 300 Baht per kilo, cut up with 2 or 3 small packets of sauce.
3 months ago it was up to 350 Baht, last week 400 Baht without any sauce! The lady that runs it knows me and I am sure that she is not ripping me off.

They may be able to buy it a bit cheaper, but judging by the prices charged in Makro I’d say they’ve probably cut their margins a bit more!!Nereus wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 10:37 am I have been buying BBQ pork from one of those two shops in Cha-am for many years.
