This is precisely the dilemma faced by all governments, even juntas, not just in terms of tourism (which of course is the main earner in Thailand), but the economy as a whole. You're a bit 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. It's a balancing act. Democratic governments also have to think about the next election, not something juntas have to worry about.

The UK appears to have gone for broke; get as many people vaccinated as possible, and as quickly as possible. To all intents and purposes, internally (i.e. excluding arrivals from abroad) we are on the way to getting back to normal as regards lockdowns and restrictions, although there are some differences in approach between the UK's countries.

People are holidaying abroad, though obviously not in pre-Covid numbers, a new word, 'staycationing*' has entered the language for holidays within the UK, crowds are back at sports events (and although that might not seem a priority, I can't begin to describe what a difference it makes), pubs are open. Obviously things are far from perfect, but it seems to me that there is a general feeling of optimism. Of course, the test will come in the next few months as the weather gets colder combined with possible new variants...

But my point is that everything is dependent on vaccinations. I don't see how anything can be done until that has been completed, and Thailand is way, way behind.

*Actually, staycationing seems to have been around since 1944, but it's new to me...
This is the way

Staycationing, or domestic travel here in Thailand, is grand ... providing there are places to visit, restaurants to eat in, pools to swim in, and bars to have a drink in the evening. All of which is closed in Thailand at the moment and many of them that were heavily reliant on foreign tourists will never reopen as the numbers will never recover to previous levels - its a vicious circle.

The U.K. may be returning to normal, but Thailand will never be the same again - especially with the puritanical "ban brigade" gestapo running the show.

I would be interested to know how many of our permanent residents would be bothered if they didn't see another tourist in Hua Hin. Probably selfish of me but I didn't move here because it was a tourist town, I prefer the "off" season and I,m pretty sure that I would still have a pretty good choice of where I could get a decent meal, drink etc. I'm a long term renter so i can "up sticks" whenever I want. I have little sympathy for the "chancers" that come here with a few bob in their pocket hoping to make a killing. I know of a few that have already moved on and good riddance, scammers and bullpoo artists.

Not wanting to get in any arguments but interested to know your views.

I personally preferred the offseason when things were quieter (but everything was still open and that was when we had seasons). However, I do have a lot of sympathy for the hundreds of thousands of regular people that ran small businesses based on regular tourist flows (the mrs had a couple: restaurant/bar/bike rental etc. but they closed before Covid hit as tourism was already going downhill fast).

It is also quite depressing to see everything boarded up, for sale/rent signs on every building, the place so desolate and in disrepair, and people so miserable - not really somewhere I'd enjoy living. I reckon it will be a permanent offseason from now on apart from a smattering of Chinese over new year.

It’s definitely going to take a long time to get back to close to how it was pre-pandemic, but I’m sure that locals (businesses anyway) will welcome tourists with open arms, they’ve been virtually bereft of income for 18 months so will have either got further in debt or used up their savings.

We all moan about traffic jams during the high season but I’m almost looking forward to when we get back to that situation again.

I am trying to book a hotel in Hua Hin for my better half when she returns in October.

Is there any news on which hotels have been allocated to the Recharge scheme as yet?

Can't find anything saying which ones.

Cheers.

I did read that it was central Hua Hin South down to Khao Tao. I don't know how accurate that is though.

If indeed it happens. Not a lot of enthusiasm for it. Chamber of Commerce don't want it. More than half of the hotels say they will not open.
Personally, I think it's a non-starter.

And to quote the Bangkok Post, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of appetite to do so by the local Business community

I didn't move here because it was a tourist town
I call BS on that statement.
HH has lots of great facilities because it is a popular tourist town.
If you really did not move here because it was a tourist town, then why didn't you move to some small village out in the sticks?

/\Hardly worth a response other than I don't really give a toss what you think and definitely not gonna share my thought processes other than where I am now is certainly far enough out of town for my liking in order to avoid the bullcrap merchants that inhabit the popular bar areas. Been there, done that and got the T shirt many moons ago up in the North east and frankly bored with it all.
