Buying a new laptop
Re: Buying a new laptop
I think ordering online is the best way to go with most things - there is still a noticeable "Hua Hin premium" on a lot of commodities.

Re: Buying a new laptop
I'm in the market for a new laptop. My Acer is around 7 or 8 years old now. Went to look for a new Acer and couldn't find one with more than 500GB HDD. When I enquired about a 1TB model, they tell me that 500GB is the max for an Acer. "Mine is over 7 years old and came with a TB Hdd when I bought it." - "Can't be". They said. Really pees me off when called a liar.
Does anyone know why the new Acers only have 500GB Hdd?

Thanks for that, Pete. Why can't salesmen just be honest and say "We don't have any" instead of lying?
Oh, then they wouldn't be 'salesmen' would they!!

It's a losing face thing. To not know or not have something would be a loss of face. Conversely, there's no problem with lying, as it's inbred into the culture, here in the land of everything backwards.
Re: Buying a new laptop
I think the modern Acer is usually SDD, so you are limited to 500Gb. From my investigations recently the larger mechanical (is that the right term?) 1Tb and larger machines are still available.

Re: Buying a new laptop
Okay I understand now. Why is SDD limited to 512gb and is it expected to increase. I find 512 quite insufficient. My Acer is 1TB and I have an added 1TB external drive, so 2TB in total and I'm running out of space!
Re: Buying a new laptop
You're obviously as disorganised as I am
I like everything on my machine, but much of it lays idle most of the time. I want to go SDD, so will keep much of my data on portable drives in future.

Yes I agree BB. I need to sort out stuff and take most of it off-line. We kept record collections and dvd collections and the like so I need to get the same mentality as then. Movies, Vids, photos etc, catalogued and stored off line.
As you say, I need to get organised.

Re: Buying a new laptop
And get the terminology correct, it’s SSD (solid state drive) or HDD (hard disk drive).
You can buy laptops with a 1TB SSD drive but they’re nowhere near as common as 512 GB and of course, quite a bit more expensive.

Thank you so much for that DB.
Re: Buying a new laptop
I recently bought an Asus with 500gb SSD which is quite adequate for me as I never store movies, so for documents and photos it´s actually way more than I need.
I think the reason for the change away from hard disc drives is the physical size and power consumption. Most of the latest laptops are very thin and you wouldn´t get a hard drive in there. The whole point of a laptop is portability and mine is very thin and light.

Don't forget that SSDs are hundred of times faster than conventional hard drives!STEVE G wrote:I recently bought an Asus with 500gb SSD which is quite adequate for me as I never store movies, so for documents and photos it´s actually way more than I need.

Another point is that most laptops are used for work and in that environment, nowadays it´s just a portal to your works intranet site where all the storage is done at the works server so onboard memory isn´t an issue.
I have an Ipad from my company and if you can´t get a 4g or wifi connection, it´s largely useless, however much memory it has.
