Re: Need of a Mobile Phone in Thailand
Increased use of QR codes and tracking may come into play, especially if Covid Wave #2 ever gets here.
More importantly I would say is simply having the peace of mind that when one of you is not at home you can contact each other either by a call through your mobile provider, a free call through an application like LINE, and the variety of ways to send text messages to each other when needed.
Having a land line installed in your house or condo is really a waste of time and money these days. Many people are cancelling their land lines, and that has been the trend here for years.

Need of a mobile phone
Thanks, no landline, just mobile
im just wondering, if 2 people go into a place that requires you to scan something on your phone, and one of you does not have a phone, will you be permitted to enter, or can 2 people be scanned in using the one single phone.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
Entry is not that strictly enforced, you just put a name on the paper and write a phone number there, no need to scan anything. I did it three times yesterday - I won't let any Thai govt app near my phone.

How are you finding the device after a few months? Any problems with it? Thinking of getting the same model to supplement my N3310.thecolonel wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 3:56 pm i bought a Poco(Xiaomi) X3 NFC 128gb, arrived a week ago and have been testing it before commenting

Im still very pleased with it!buksida wrote:How are you finding the device after a few months? Any problems with it? Just a few minor snags.... Otherwise delighted!
1. The fast charging feature stopped working after 3 weeks. After a bit of testing, turned out it was simply the USB cable(not the charging unit) The retailer I bought from(JD Central in Bkk) were very good in listening to my appeal NOT to have return the handset having spent 3 weeks setting it all up! I asked for a new charging set first of all to rule that out and they duly obliged( I would deffo buy from them again, great service and communication). Subsequently I have purchased my own 2m usb c charging cable as the ones they give you are just too short
2. Xiaomi Cloud- not a big issue at all, but you get 5gb free and mine is full. Despite deleting photos it's still full, I just can't work out how to manage content (if you buy one perhaps you can help me! Haha).
3. Camera- on one occasion (in 3 months) my camera app wouldn't open so I rebooted and it was fine. Prior to that I occasionally had an intermittent issue with attaching photos to line messages. That may have been connected. Might have been the line app or my(default) camera app??
I still somewhat wish you could get these latest model phones in my old 5.5 inch size but that said I've been surprised how I've just adjusted to the larger size. It's not 'too big' to be fair
Good luck with your decision, any further questions please ask.

Thanks, that device is still the best bang for the buck in terms of hardware specs. Not too bothered about any built-in software and Xiaomi Clouds as I usually uninstall most of it.
I have the same issue with the camera app on my Samsung, it happens when another app has taken control of the camera.

The only reason I want the xiaomi cloud is to save all my phone settings should I ever need to swap devices(lost stolen faulty).buksida wrote:Thanks, that device is still the best bang for the buck in terms of hardware specs. I also use their 'notes' system a lot and would hate to lose that data. As you say I couldn't care about the photos in there as I keep them in Google Photos. I've told the cloud app to delete them but the space doesnt get cleared... No biggie!
Out of interest what other phones are you considering? I'm not surprised that the poco x3 has the best specs per baht

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
The only problem with that is that it will only work on another Xiaomi phone, this why I tend to stick with Google apps that work on all Android devices (despite gobbling your personal data). Phone manufacturers like to lock their users into their own ecosystems (Apple is the king of this).
The other device I've eyed is the Samsumg M31 which my son has.

You never know re future tho....buksida wrote:The only problem with that is that it will only work on another Xiaomi phone, this why I tend to stick with Google apps that work on everything (despite gobbling your personal data).

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
One extremely important consideration to factor in to which phone to purchase, is the fact that Samsung have moved their production out of china.
By doing this, Samsung have guaranteed my business until my dying day.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
I've been a Samsung customer for several years but the batteries on the last two Samsung devices I've bought have died prematurely and are built-in and non-replaceable. For that alone, I'm trying something else this time.

Typically when I plug in at night I have on average 40% left, and I use my poco x3 a lotbuksida wrote:I've been a Samsung customer for several years but the batteries on the last two Samsung devices I've bought have died prematurely and are built-in and non-replaceable. See attached.... approaching 13 hours and 60% left
And its replaceable afaik, although by a technician
Also, with all these virus issues I feel NFC is going to get even more popular.... no shared touching of money or credit cards
Same for IR blaster, you can control TV, AC etc and not touch remote that other people (hotel guests etc) have
Some might say the x3 is a little heavy but I don't have a problem with it. And it's great when I forget to overnight charge. Just give it a blast in the morning and you're good to go. Long battery life is important to me

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the device on Lazada last week and am very impressed so far. A few comments though ...
Battery charging - it does this quick, like 20% to 99% in less than half an hour. Is this good for the battery to fast charge it all the time? Is there a way to slow charge it?
The battery life is superb, but you'd expect that from a brand new 5,000+mAh battery.
It will cast to the TV and act as a remote, which is handy if you use such options.
With the seventh-gen Snapdragon chipset, it is fast, too fast for me - really noticeable when upgrading from a three-year-old Samsung!
The camera protrudes from the back which is not great, but a decent armoured case makes it flush again. The camera works well even in low light which is impressive for a mobile.
I've managed to disable all the Mi bloatware and notifications which were annoying to say the least.
The other only major annoyance is that you can't have two SIM cards and an SD card at the same time, its 'either or' due to the limitations of the design of the card slot holder. No biggie however as 128Gb is plenty of space for my needs and I only need the second SIM when travelling.
