'Completely crap': Renault expose truth of Ricciardo's '$49m salary'
https://au.sports.yahoo.com/completely- ... 14093.html
Daniel Ricciardo is on a similar salary to his old Red Bull pay packet, according to his new boss, who has slammed reports of a monstrous yearly wage.
An English newspaper claimed ahead of the Australian Grand Prix that the Renault driver had jumped to No.3 on the Formula One salaries list.
The Mirror reported Ricciardo as earning close to $49 million this year, behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel ($56m) and Mercedes champion Lewis Hamilton ($74m).
But Renault F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul has now expanded on comments he made in January, when he said he hadn’t paid “stupid money” for Ricciardo.
“We have not tried to be silly about that, all the speculation about his salary are completely crap and I really want to take that away,” the Frenchman told Speedcafe this week.
“(Ricciardo is) clearly not here for the money, I mean it’s no different to what he would have received at Red Bull or anywhere else. That’s not the driving force behind his decision.”
A salary close to his Red Bull wage would likely put Ricciardo somewhere either side of $15m.
The 29-year-old joined Renault in the hope that he could replicate Hamilton’s move to Mercedes in 2013.
The German outfit finished fourth, fourth and fifth after buying Brawn GP ahead of the 2010 season.
Mercedes jumped to second in Hamilton’s first season and have since won five consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
“Renault is a factory team. It’s a very big car maker; 40 years of very successful history in the sport,” Abiteboul said.
“So having a responsibility in contributing to that, I think (Ricciardo) liked, was up for the challenge.
“I think what we’ve done during those meetings was simply be honest and treating him like an adult, like a grown up that obviously he is.”
Ricciardo has previously said he felt boxed in by Red Bull, opting to break free of his connection to their junior program.
But his Renault debut in Melbourne went poorly, forced to retire from the first race of the season following front-wing damage on the first lap.
“We are determined to show more in Bahrain,” Abiteboul said ahead of this weekend’s race.
“We have to underline the step we’ve made on the engine side, and the second grand prix of 2019 is an opportunity to showcase that. We will bring some aero updates, as we will do at every race.
“We also need to target consistency over the course of the entire weekend, delivering a balanced and reliable car in all sessions to allow the drivers to extract respective maximum performance.
“Equally, we need to target operational excellence in all areas. Having both cars inside the points is the target and we want to show the qualities of our team. We have to be hard on ourselves if we’re to keep on our path.”

Mick Schumacher to make rapid Ferrari F1 debut
https://au.sports.yahoo.com/mick-schuma ... 46771.html
Mick Schumacher, son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, will reportedly make his Formula 1 test debut for Ferrari in April.
Off the back of his successful European F3 championship success last year, the 20-year-old will reportedly make his F1 test debut on 2 April.
He is also making his Formula 2 series debut this weekend in Bahrain.
The German will reportedly drive for Ferrari in the post-Bahrain Grand Prix test on one day and perform for the affiliated Alfa Romeo team the following day.
Schumacher recently signed up for the Ferrari Driver Academy following his European Formula 3 championship success.
Mick’s father, Michael, is a seven-time champion F1 champion. Five of his record-breaking seven titles came with Ferrari. The majority of his 91 Grand Prix wins also came with the famous Italian car manufacturer.
Michael Schumacher, 50, retired from F1 racing in 2012. He suffered a serious brain injury in a skiing accident in 2013.

Note: Don't pay any attention to spoons on any Superbru pool. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes a wrong spoon carries over to the next event when it shouldn't. I'm not going to wait to post results to give them time to correct it, which is usually within 12-24 hours.

FP1: Vettel heads Hamilton as 1000th race weekend gets underway
https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/arti ... DijAJ.html
Sebastian Vettel put the memories of his bumpy weekend in Bahrain behind him to head Free Practice 1 in China ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton, as the 1000th Formula 1 World Championship event got underway in Shanghai.
Vettel ended the session with a 0.207s advantage over Hamilton, his chief sparring partner from Bahrain two weeks ago. But while the gap between the two wasn’t huge, Vettel set his session-leading time on the slower medium tyres, while Hamilton was on the softs – an ominous indication of the Ferrari’s power advantage here this weekend.
Behind the leading pair came the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, with around 0.2s separating him from fourth-placed Max Verstappen in the leading Red Bull, who was followed by the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.
Having endured a torrid start to his career with Renault, Daniel Ricciardo – wearing a special Jack Brabham tribute helmet – put in a great lap to head the midfield for the first time so far in 2019, finishing P6 and ahead of the Red Bull of Pierre Gasly, Ricciardo’s time 1.328s off Vettel’s pace.
Gasly refrained from using the soft tyres – perhaps partly explaining his deficit to team mate Verstappen – while Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat in P8, Racing Point’s Lance Stroll in P9 and Haas’ Romain Grosjean in P10 were all separated by just 0.06s. Stroll, meanwhile, provided the main entertainment in the session, slewing his RP19 wildly across the track at the final corner early on in FP1 before getting back on his way.
At the back of the field, and two years on from his fraught appearance in Shanghai for Sauber, Antonio Giovinazzi was enduring a miserable start to his weekend, a power loss issue on his Alfa Romeo preventing him from setting a time. With his C38 needing to be taken apart to fix the problem, the Alfa mechanics looked to have a busy few hours ahead of them to get everything ready for FP2.
The Italian’s lack of lap, meanwhile, meant that Williams were once again slowest, Robert Kubica heading George Russell.
Before the weekend got underway, we asked whether the pendulum in China would swing towards Mercedes or Ferrari – and first signs indicate that it’s looking very good for the Scuderia early doors...
