I think I've posted this about San Paulo before, but I can only speak as I've found. On 2 occassions I've visited San Paulo with minor ailments, received treatment and left the place feeling fine. On those occassions, when I asked the question, "How much?" I was told that there was nothing to pay.

Maybe I was lucky, but on both occassions they put me ahead of everybody else, and treated me superbly.

I have been there with other minor ailments and been charged, but the cost has never been excessive. The last time I had to have a toe nail removed (did not take the anesthetic), I had to return daily for a week to have it dressed, and was prescribed a course of anti-biotics - cost 1400Baht.

All the hospitals here BB I'm afraid may have learned too much from their USA and EU counterparts.

My daughter was born at Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital. I bought a vaccine package that took her all the way through her shots up to last week when she turned 18 months, when she got the last one in the package.

Along with these visits for vaccine, she was always examined by the doctor, weighed, measured etc. The routine has never changed from month 1 to month 18. Month 1 the extra charge for the examination was about 240 Baht. Her visit last week was 564 Baht. Nothing new and different, same doctor, same nurses, same service, same routine, and same amount of time spent.

A friend of mine was in a small MC accident on Saturday. Hit while stopped at an interesction by a drunk Thai celebrating Chinese New Year. She got knocked backwards and cracked her tail bone and cut her left elbow. Not a bad cut, just road rash which looks worse than it is. The very first thing they said was that she had to be admitted and stay 2 days. She laughed and asked why? They had no clear answer as a cracked tail bone can only be healed by time, not casts or anything else. She was then told to come back every two days to change the dressing on her cut elbow, at 200 Baht per time. She laughed again as clearly this can be done at home.

The hospitals here are milking for all it is worth. Maybe after high season ends they will regain their sanity? As soon as you walk in you see a doctor, a nurse and an administrator with a calculator in her/his hand. The gods of money me thinks have wrestled the realm away from the gods of mercy. Pete

PS: Yes, she had a good helmet on and the back was cracked badly in the spot where her head hit the ground. She didn't even have a headache. Proof once again what we've been talking about on other threads.

Conflicting reports on my own experiences at Sao Paolo:

1. Last year my wife had appendicitis. Admitted 2 p.m. Saturday, surgeon contacted, operated on 4 p.m., 3 nights stay in a private room, after care, stitches removed, etc. Total bill THB 41,000. Insurance picked up THB 40,000 of the tab. Service was excellent, doctor readily available for consultation, nursing care excellent.

2. Been there myself for minor ailments (including broken ribs). Service fast and very good. Treatment costs reasonable. Big problem: they always seem to prescribe the most expensive medication they can think of - justify it by saying that they're high quality Western drugs. I have insisted on occasions that I don't need certain drugs and the bill has been adjusted accordingly. Moral: check the bill for what you're getting and don't be afraid to question it in a reasonable manner. Best of all, ask the doctor what he's prescribing you before you get to the pharmacy and cash point.

Was in SP in December to get a minor cut stiched, got 3 stiches.
All including anesthetic,tetanus and antibiotics.
Total 3000 bath - medicine account for around 2000 bath.
I have no complaint about the service in ER, but will after this always be questioning the medication.

Last summer my sister's daughter was bitten by a monkey on Khao Takiap. We ended up in SP and they helped the girl very good and quickly. Gave a few shots and a lot of pills for the next days. She went back a few times to clean up the wound. They also gave her a letter for China Airlines that she needed a better seat on the flight back home.

My VISA-card was good enough for the bill of THB 9.500 which was all covered by the insurance so it all ended well.

In time gone past, I've visited SP for a few stitches. Many times, believe me.
I don't reckon I ever paid more than 750. Mind you that was a few years ago.
Which brings me back to the horrible increases in price that SP are trying to get away with.
They're userers, people.

9,500 bt? My son was also bitten by a monkey on Khao Takiab & I paid about 4,000bt all told (SP, also) including 5 rabies shots (which are 2,500 - 3,000bt wherever you go). Maybe the difference is my son is pure Thai?? :? Or maybe it was the insurance...

My experience with SP was Fantastic !
I was unfortunate enough to slip on a tiled surface at a neighbors house reached out to grab a hold of what ever was there and proceeded to push my hand through a window pane which created a rather large gash just below my wrist where the top half of the glass slid down the frame like a guillotine and came into contact with my wrist . not only was there a massive wound and blood gushing out but a more serious issue of a severed tendon in my little finger .
On arrival at SP I was told after a quick exam that i Needed to Pay in excess of 50k upfront as i didn't have insurance and the Dr and surgeon would be arriving seven hours later ....

As many of you would imagine the air was blue as I left pinching the wound together and preceded to ask the wife to order a taxi .
the Taxi was asked to take us to BKK to the military university hospital near victory monument where we arrived just under 2 hours later at a cost of 1500 Thb which was paid and the driver thanked for his speedy service .
I entered A&E and was dealt with within moments within 15 mins i was on a opp table in a side ward of A&E with a surgeon and a full complement of nursing staff which made all the necessary repairs to the stringy bits and stitched the fleshy bits back together which took over 3 & half hours

An hour later I was told i could be discharged and asked to pay for the treatment at the counter in the hall way where they presented me with a bill for all the services, treatment, sundries, surgeon and nursing staff...

I was truly expecting something quite heavy here ...

But the full amount for the whole lot was ......

wait for this ...............

You will have the shock of your life .................

you will now wonder how outfits like SP blatantly get away with over charging for their services ....................

The Bill was Thb 3,500 Total, including every thing. I was gobsmaked and even asked if they had made a mistake after the demand at SP for in excess of 50 k upfront and a several hour wait for a surgeon, which i was told by the Dr in Bkk may have been too late to any thing with the tendon

So the cost was less than 6,000 including taking the minibus back to HH & crisps and pop

A good 45K cheaper than SP with immediate attention
& yes i do understand it isn't always possible to take a trip to another hospital as i did, but there are far better options than SP within the area and just outside the area
it has been said before and i will repeat SP is great if you want a colonic or tit enlargement or some form of cosmetic surgery but as far as any A&E services LOOK else where !

Great post Dave. It gave me an idea. No - my tits are already too big  - why not have a separate printable page for all hospitals and clinics in the area, phone numbers and how to get there along with some hospitals in Bangkok. I'm sure someone selling health insurance would want to sponsor such a page?

Iomuamart you put me to shame!! There's me whining and moaning about a bill of 130,000 plus for 28 days. You nearly cleared that in only 10!
Incidentely, a few posts have mentioned the expensive medication perscribed at SP. After my operation in Petcherat the Dr. who performed it gave me the required medication I needed for the following 2 months at a very reasonable price. On arrival at SP they refused point blank in allowing me to take this medication, insisting on their own which was 5-6 times the price. I dont know if this is due to legal reasons or just about extra cash. I fear the latter is probably the reason.
Randy, in response to your mates experience nearly having his arm amputated I know a guy that cut his toe on a piece of coral and his leg got a very severe infection, most of you already know this man I believe, he went to SP and yes...."sir we are going to have to amputate your leg". I believe the response was something along the lines of NO *%&^#!!* WAY and he duly went to another hospital where he was on certain medication, now he walks around fine like nothing ever happened.

The worst story I have heard is my Thai friend's father had a seizure and was taken in to hospital. He was a diabetic and all he needed was an insulin jag. They treated him for a heart attack and he unfortunately died.

I swear by the the polyclinic but I guess it depends on the urgency and time of day. Dr. Saran is the best doctor I've dealt with in HH

SP recently advertised a health check which I took up at 1500 THB. Completed in an hour with chest xray, blood test, urine test, results and a visit with the doctor, copies of everything given to me for future reference. Medication presribed to reduce cholestrol - which I didn't really need because it was no different from last year in the UK. I went to pay and was charged, in addtion to the original fee, an etra THB500 for the doctor (???) and they tried to get THB5000 for medication.
I didn't get the meds, by the way and couldn't get through to them that the doctor's fee should be inclsuinve. Just a warning really. I will ask more questions and check the finer details more fully in future.

Friend got bitten by a dog. Spent less than an hour in SP A&E, cleaned the wounds, stitches, jabs (lots of, many unnecessary ). Cost - more than 15,000 Baht.

I argued on his behalf for a few minutes, but it was all itemised and ultimately it was his decision whether to pay or not.

They kept asking 'why did the dog bite you'? Frankly, that's none of their business. One nurse said (in Thai, assuming we couldn't understand), 'drunken farang plays with dog, gets bitten, serves him right'.

Daylight robbery, rude and highly unprofessional to boot. That place is a disgrace.
