Amazing Thailand
Amazing Thailand
Firstly may I complement the manufacturers, admin and moderators of this site and forum
This has got to be one of the most informative and easy to use sites I have come across on my travels
Secondly, I didn’t expect to see any where in Thailand or even more so Hua Hin
The events that occurred on Saturday night outside and in side Jaews bar in the late night drinking area
I witnessed violence more likely to occur at 1970’s / 80’s football match
I was actually in the bar next door well after legal opening hours when a disagreement between two westerners which was basically some loud words and shoving which was over and done with in moments apparently one of the guys had been disrespectful to the wife of the other guy, as I said it was over and done with in seconds the two guys went their separate ways, no problem. I continued to enjoy my beverage whilst noticing the arrival of a large group of Thai teenager’s males and females to Jaews bar
About five minutes later one of the guys who was involved in the incident before re appeared and re entered the bar only to be attacked without warning by a Thai girl with a large tattoo on her shoulder brandishing a glass ash tray the guy tried to push her away two times only to be set upon by 10 to 15 Thai people all with bottles and any thing they could use as a weapon ,there was many other people on the scene helplessly looking on another guy was hit with a ashtray over his head by the same girl who attacked the first guy for trying to break the up the fight .
The Thais used up their ammo up got as many kicks in as they could and fled the scene like scared chickens out of the bazaar via any exit they could find
Leaving one guy covered in blood and being led off only to hospital I presume
After talking to a few people this seems to be a common occurrence at this particular bar
I truly hope this guy wasn’t injured too much
I certainly will not be drinking in this area again
And would recommend any one else not to use this area
Slightly sad for my first posting but there you go Hua Hin seems to be more violent than Bangkok

Red Dwarf why are you so surprised? You were in area frequented by hookers, junkies and a lot of drunk people AND it was at the end of the night, in a third world country!
With this volatile mixture this could happen anywhere in the world.
Sorry it ruined your night though.
Most Thai's are pussies when it comes to real fighting and will only attack in groups, not like back home where most insist on "one on one"!

I would love to see these bars forced to close at 1.00 the same as the bars in soi binterbarn. But sadly as they are owned and run by Thais they can basically do what they want!
God forbid the ferand run bars are allowed to stay open and earn themselves some decent money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a friend who teaches in Thailand and I asked him the other day if commerce was taught in his school, his reply was yes but the young Thais just don't seem to get the jist of what it is all about.
The Thais can't see beyond earning their next baht.
Their future could be so much more promising if they just stoppted being so closed minded and short term money driven to the extent they loose sight of the bigger money making potential that tourisim offers.
Sorry I digressed somewhat.

What?
Hi guys,
A few points:
First:
Can you please tell me where this Jaews bar is? Is it in/ near the Soi Binterbarn area? I shall be over there in August and would dearly love to avoid that kind of hassle.
Second:
I've only been to HH once before and didn't see any problems.
Third:
I've travelled quite extensively in Thailand over a period of years (both with and without a partner) and never seen anything that remotely looked like trouble and that includes areas of Pattaya and Bangkok at times when you might expect a problem.
I was very disappointed to read this (but point taken aleycat), but being an old (relatively any way!) softie, would rather not have to fend for myself. (point also taken Randy Corhole and in some ways I have to agree with you, even though I don't like to say it as I have a soft spot and are very fond of Thais as I guess you all are)

Nah, must be more to it!
Hi MGB,
It's in the night Bazaar Area (see http://www.huahinafterdark.com/map.htm on this site for locations of bars)
and http://www.thaiwaysmagazine.com/hua_hin ... a_hin.html for a map covering a greater area of Hua Hin.
Sadly alleykat and Randy Cornhole are only too aware.............

Agree with the above, particularly these two snippets which, for me, sum it all up.Randy Cornhole wrote:The Thais can't see beyond earning their next baht.
Got to agree with Alleycat, this could happen anywhere - it doesn't happen often but I've seen aggro, to varying degrees, all over Hua Hin.
A girl got bottled and hospitalised in a popular bar in Bintabaht a few weeks ago and the owner was telling me they were still cleaning the blood off the walls the next day. When these girls get drunk they usually fight with each other, usually over a punter, but occasionally a farang gets involved, when it's usually best to just let them get on with it. Thai's can also hold a grudge well into the next life, so it's quite possible the thai teens decended on Jaew's because they were looking for someone specific - it's not unheard of. The numbers involved here suggest this may well have been a possibility - they won't leave things to chance so bring a squad for security and maximum effect. I think the chances of an unprovoked attack on a random farang by a tooled up mob, are fairly remote.
I wouldn't neccessarily be put off the bazaar area after hours because of this regrettable incident. This area has picked up ten fold in the last year - when I was in town last Songkran you'd be lucky to find 5 punters in Jaew's place and a few in the karaokes. This year a couple of new bars have opened and the place was packed out every night. I spent many a good night up there without a hint of any bother. Like I said, it could happen anytime, anywhere. If you're looking for a few more drinks and a laugh after hours you could do worse than trying the bazaar.

Never trust a hippy....
I too was in the bazaar area a couple of times last Songkhran and didn't see any trouble. I arrived very late and esconced myself at Nancy's karaoke with an American pal of mine for a few hours, getting home to a locked up house and an angry wife! The only 'trouble' I saw was a group of very drunk Northern European twenty somethings being asked to leave by Nancy (whom I mistakenly remembered as Pearl in a different thread). Hope there's no trouble after the rugby on Sunday..... I'm so nearly there... I can almost taste the Chang!

I would agree with the other posters in as much as it's extremely unlikely for a forigner to be the target of an unprovoked attack by Thais.
I've seen and heard of these assaults before and almost without exception there is some previous history behind it.
After 7 years here in HH, I certainly feel much safer walking the streets at night than in London, or any other city for that matter.

Jaew's Bar
I've hung out many a time in that particular bar. No troubles from anyone, and Jaew is as friendly as they come.
I would recommend that bar or that area of town to anyone. The biggest nuisance I have ever experienced in Hua Hin usually comes from stray dogs that want to take a bite out of me. Then again, I know when to keep my mouth shut.

That's the key!

It's a relief to know that it's not a place of regular brawls.

I think this is the key to avoiding most/all trouble, keep yer nose out of it and even more so if you are a Farang. What a down to earth lot you are. It's pleasing to know there are folks like you out there talking sense. Then again, I know when to keep my mouth shut

Free advice
In all the years I've been in Thailand I have never had a fight, where as when in England this was part of a normal night out, I know the piss will change a happy go lucky guy in to a looney and a looney in to an even bigger looney. I've been to loads of places where a fight has started mostly out in the sticks, but some times in town here's what I try to do
Never Never get involved when a Thai gets the red mist anything can happen just read the news posts.
You are never going to win asia's fixation with losing face will mean that if you win you are going to be a marked man, a guy who loses face also has friends who will lose face for knowing him.
Yeah sure if you get angy you lose face this only applies to Farang as Thai's can move the goal posts any time they want.
Just move a little bit further away and enjoy the spectical, these things last seconds over here, not like England where two guys will stand toe to toe and try and beat the crap out of each other.
Girls are as bad if not worse than boys.
I was in a Thai bar recently when two girls kicked off within seconds the whole place blew up must have been twenty people fighting or trying and many more outside trying to get in on the action, my wife said we must leave now the police are coming. I had to tell her rather harshly to sit down and shut up. The brawl continued within feet of us and nobody could careless, different story if I had tried to calm things down, one of the girls was with us. Anyway the fight lasted about two or three minutes, the boys in brown arrived (very quickly) and delt out their version of justice and the bar was closed on the spot and for the rest of the week. What I mean to say is don't be whimp if someone had hit my wife then they would have been met by a six foot two fifteen stone tornado on the other hand don't try and be a hero a large bottle of chang cracked on your head can ruin your whole day. If you are coming on holiday HH it's not the wild west, I've never been to a safer place, It takes two to tango and usually does.

There's no such thing as a free lunch
This topic seems to have created a spiral of mixed responses which all seem to be of conflicting opinions
It would appear that street brawls and bar fights is a regular feature of Hua Hin life
There are some extremely valid points made by some of the posters while others seem to be that they haven’t witnessed such events
or have not been in Hua Hin for some time, unfortunately Times do change people do change and places do change some times for the worst .
after reading other post on this forum regarding ,bar owners being attacked ,tourists being attacked, and regular bar and street fights
it would seem there are some undesirable elements in town at present regardless of creed or nationality but looking at past postings it would seem the more undesirable element is Thai youth gangs cruising round looking for any opportunity to show presence rather than strength at any opportunity with these sort of cowardly attacks, without thinking about the consequences for their actions, Do they realize if the tourism goes away their lively hoods of their families goes away too
it doesn’t take long for opinion to form about people and places, as we can see from the responses on this forum
But 15 to 1 is not cricket
As one poster said “It doesn’t matter how many black belts you've got, when the odds are 15/1. I don't think Bruce Lee would winâ€
