TJ, you have missed one very small point, win or loose, the ashes will be going back on the plane with us. The ashes always live in England, never anywhere else. If you are lucky, they may leave a photo of them for you to hang on the wall.

Has been a let down, England under performing and the old guard from Oz proving their outstanding talent and heart for the fight (looks like the new guard could be equally dangerous - bugger!!).

Its a shame it didnt match the last series in England that was probably the best ever.

Hope we get our acts together cause this one has been bollxxxx.
Well done Oz.

Yes,well done Australia,we were outplayed in the first 4 Tests just hope it rains in Sydnet to save our blushes. We have too many players who have not performed,Flintoffs batting,Strauss and Harmison earlier in the series would not get into Australia A team.
Ah well I will just have to comfort myself with Man Utd winning the Premiership

I won't even start to link all the articles I've read from the British press.
They can get their "head doctors" in there together with their "team spirit" and talk as much as they want to, but at the end of the day we were beaten by a far superior side. Well played Australia - even though I know there's someone in Perth who'll be gloating now.
A whitewash? If so it'll be the first time since the '20s, I think.
C'mon you barmy army. That was said very quietly :thumb:

Well I can assure that person will not be me, all I can say is that I hope that the next test last until after Thursday at 7.00am, as I will be flying off to the UK, to sulk in my beer with all the rest of them.

Na, didn't mean you, Chelsea.
Just an old friend who I met in HH years ago. He was one who "extracted the michael" out of me all those years ago when the English were losing in those days.

Is that true? I've wanted to ask for a long time but hesitated thinking some past and famous cricket player's ashes were in there?

What is the history behind this??? Pete

The series is named after a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882 after the match at The Oval, in which Australia beat England in England for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour, to Australia (1882-83) as the quest to regain The Ashes.

A small terracotta urn was presented to the England captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women at some point during the 1882-83 tour. The contents of the urn are reputed to be the ashes of an item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump.

The Ashes is a Test cricket series, played between England and Australia - it is international cricket's oldest and most celebrated rivalry dating back to 1882. It is currently played nominally biennially, alternately in England and Australia. However since cricket is a summer game, the venues being in opposite hemispheres means the break between series is alternately 18 months and 30 months. If a series is drawn then the country holding the Ashes retains them.

The urn is now used as a trophy for the Ashes series, and whichever side holds the Ashes, the urn normally remains in the Marylebone Cricket Club Museum at Lord's because it was bequeathed to the MCC by Ivo Bligh upon his death.[1] Since the 1998-99 Ashes series, a Waterford crystal trophy has been presented to the winners.

A five-Test Ashes series is currently underway in Australia: Australia has an unbeatable 4-0 lead, and have thus regained the Ashes. England's win in the previous series in 2005 was their first in 18 years. The next series in England will be held in 2009.
