New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
There's already a one way road behind Market Village. It works well. Vehicles usually only drive in one direction Some even drive in the correct direction.
[Edit] The big problem is, and always will be motorcyclists - they are a law unto themselves. Rarely (yes it happens) will you see a car, lorry or bus driving in the wrong direction. Also, motorcyclists will rarely yield if a car slows down to give way to pedestrians, making it too dangerous to slow down for pedestrians. If the idiot motorcyclists (I'm not saying all motorcyclists) could ride courteously, there would be no need for a bridge anyway.

Really?! Have we been driving on different roads all these years!Big Boy wrote:Rarely (yes it happens) will you see a car, lorry or bus driving in the wrong direction.

Are you saying it doesn't happen at all, or it happens quite frequently where you live?
I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but on any journey, cars, lorries and buses will equate to less than 1% of offenders.

BB is correct regarding the 'one-way' behind MV. It does happen that a car will drive in the wrong direction but it is quite rare on that road. I use the road often and if a car is coming the other way, I refuse to give way and force it to reverse to a point where I can pass. In this case there really is no excuse as there is a good road at the other side of the railway line.buksida wrote:Really?! Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
The root of most traffic problems is the police. Instead of doing their jobs and patrolling to watch for dangerous drivers they set up road blocks to look at driver licenses, usually in the shade. And do not even look to see if tires, lights, horn, or anything else is in working order. Safety is not a concern.

I'm interested in the negative comments about a bridge. Compare it to the Mall in Korat, which currently has one heavily used bridge that crosses the 6 lane highway outside and their own service Road directly into the Mall at level 2. The 'other side' of the road is where many local buses and songtoews drop off and collect passengers.
They're building a 2nd bridge to service the new extension at the other end of the Mall and in due course, new traffic management will be introduced that will enable a right turn when leaving the Mall, rather than all traffic having to turn left to add to an often heavily congested road at rush hours and at other times.
I think a bridge would work and it should be MV's responsibility to provide and maintain it. That's what the Mall does in Korat (including paying for the new traffic management scheme).

Of course in a city driving the wrong way is less likely to happen than on open roads or highways. But I still see it every single day, so hardly "rare".

Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
I sincerely hope you're right, but the bridge 50 yards away, as I have already said, is so lightly used, a Thai (or maybe Burmese?) family moved in a while back.caller wrote:I think a bridge would work and it should be MV's responsibility to provide and maintain it. I will believe it, when I see it.

always use the overpass but some people just think 50yards is to fat to save your life need one at police box at bottom lights a right chicken run trying to cross there better than 2 within 100 yards of each other

Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
I was sat outside KFC last night to watch the football. I had a perfect view of that crossing.
Last night there was a police officer (at least he was wearing a Traffic Police vest) helping people across the road. Of course, he had a whistle in his mouth, so felt he was invincible. There were 2 serious incidents whilst I was watching:
- In the first incident, whistle blowing, the officer stopped the first vehicle in the nearside lane, and carried on leading his sheep into the outside lane. A white pickup came down at speed, and even the deathly sound of his pea charged whistle wasn't going to stop him. The officer literally dived for his life, and the pickup carried on unhindered to his waiting somtam.
- In an almost identical incident about an hour later, the officer stood his ground, and with an almighty screeching of brakes, the pea charged whistle did its job.
Both incidents must have been scary for the sheep blindly following this man of authority. On both occasions, no action was taken. I would have expected a registration number to have been taken in the first incident and a right royal bollocking should have been dealt out for the second.
This brought home to me that something needs to be done, but I'm not convinced a bridge will be the answer.
I will also add, there were no motorcycles involved in either incident.

A couple of well marked 6 inch high humps across the road would be a good start. This brought home to me that something needs to be done, but I'm not convinced a bridge will be the answer.

Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
Well guys, I had a huge belly laugh today when I saw the Bluport Solution to crossing Petchkasem Road. My dashcam picked it up in both directions, but my laughter was so loud on my outbound journey (together with a few expletives) that it wasn't suitable for public viewing. However, I forced myself to be quiet on the homeward journey in the hope that it would happen again - of course it did. TIT and low tech works(ish).
They built a very pretty footbridge - not a soul on it. They installed pedestrian lights - they seem to permanently flash amber, not that people take notice of traffic lights,
So what is the solution? 2 security guards gingerly stepping in front of traffic trying to help people across the road. I stopped for them in both directions after checking there were no motorcycles about. As the security guard gingerly steps out, I could see the fear in his eyes, although I don't think the dashcam picks that out - look at his footsteps, they may tell you his state of mind.

Maybe there's no-one on the bridge or crossing the road because they're all driving cars and motorcycles!
