One with promise to watch for:

"Queen of the South" is a new series starting next month on USA network. It is about a female Mexican drug kingpin. The adverts and trailers showing on USA right now make it look like a very good series.

The story and two major plot devices (SPOILERS BELOW) reminds me of the days when network TV was aimed squarely below the middle of the intelligence and education of the population. When network executives called their offerings 'programming' in public and 'sh*t' in private - and their autobiographies. On the plus side, the acting, cinematography and sets were of the caliber expected for a major cable drama.

== SPOILERS BELOW ===

The time traveler recruits a school teacher to stop the Kennedy assassination. He has spent years in the past. He's no dummy. He gives the teacher extensive instructions. And yet either none of those instructions included, or the teacher was too stupid to act upon: 1) Don't bring anything undeniably from the future into the past (he did), 2) Here is how things will be different, so don't make an ass or target out of yourself by being surprised or inappropriate (he did), 3) Here is the info you will need for successful sports bets to finance your years there (he took 1 paper copy - any guesses what happened?), 4) Don't get involved with anyone (he's young, he's Steve Franco, TV shows must be populated with pretty people so he keeps meeting random babes and, most importantly, lowest common denominator TV and Movies absolutely must include romance to keep the women watching. It also must include action to keep the men, which leads to a time travel convention beyond ludicrous just so things can keep randomly threatening the teacher's life')

War and Peace 4 part mini series

From TV.com:

"Adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s sweeping historical saga of 19th century Russia versus Napoleon's invasion. The story focuses on the fortunes of five aristocratic Russian families in the fading days of imperial Russia. First broadcast on BBC One, the mini-series will be simulcast in the U.S. on Lifetime, A&E Network and History channel over four weeks as two hour episodes. Weinstein Company is producing with BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Worldwide/Lookout Point. The series' principal photography took place in Russia, Lithuania and Latvia."

I just power watched the whole thing yesterday and it was pretty good.

"Vinyl"

New HBO series about the record business in the late 60's and early 70's. The two hour pilot was excellent, if not for the drama, for the music alone!

Written, directed, and produced by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger...

Now on episode 3 of 4 - I absolutely love it! Both the production and the acting is first class. I highly recommend it.

One to watch for, coming next year...

"Tom Hardy is savage in the first trailer for his new FX series from Ridley Scott

Image

Oscar nominee Tom Hardy, who was in "The Revenant" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" last year, rides the line between London gentleman and savage on the event series for FX "Taboo."

The cable network released the first trailer for "Taboo," which shows Hardy rubbing some very powerful men the wrong way as he tries to fulfill the mysterious legacy his father left for him.

Hardy, who stars in and executive-produces the series, plays James Keziah Delaney.

It's 1814, and he's returning to London after 10 years in Africa and is believed dead by those who knew him. In defending his father's legacy against his enemies, James finds himself in a face-off against the most powerful trading firm at the time, the East India Company. ..."

More here plus trailer...

The way Brendan Dassy was manipulated into admitting something he clearly was not involved in, just so that his case could be used to further screw Avery is .....not sure I know the word....scandalous beyond beleif.

His own defense lawyer and his inspector were trying to frame him for something so serious that he clearly did not do.

The whole blood in the tube and the FBI involvement, the calling in of the missing vehicle, complete lack of the deceased's DNA in Avery's house, the missing DNA on the car key found in Averys house on the 3rd search missing, the list goes on and on.....

Gripping TV, I did 10 episodes over a 2 day period. A must watch.

I don't thing this story has ended yet somehow.

Making a Murderer update: we’re now looking at Teresa Halbach’s death certificate and it seems that the Calumet County coroner has some explaining to do.

According to UPROXX, Freedom of Information requests piled up from those interested in Steven Avery’s case. This led to the release of Halbach’s certificate, which can be viewed by the public here. If you know your Making a Murderer facts, then you will soon realize that this document is full of contradictions. Let’s take a moment to review them…

House of Cards season 4 dropped today in the US. Plenty of torrent sources from which to choose.

Season 1 was the best, and they Jumped the Shark in season 3. Enjoying Kevin Spacey's work makes it worthwhile - until one hits their limit of face palms per episode.

Bosch Season 2
Starts today on Amazon in the US.

No need to have watched season 1 to give season 2 a try because each season will be a different homicide case. Season 1 established that Bosch is a brilliant and experienced homicide detective. Keeps investigating with bulldog determination on cases others think are hopeless or solved. Bends the rules. Breaks ones that won't get a case or evidence thrown out of court. He exposed a dangerously stupid decision by a publicity seeking Chief, knowing both it would end the Chief's political hopes and get himself fired. In season 2 he's a Private Detective.

OK I like simple shows as well as complex ones. I recently downloaded both seasons of Crime Story.

It aired back in 1986-88 and is set in the 60's. About a special team of cops focused on an up and coming gangster. The series follows both sides as the locale changes from Chicago to Las Vegas. There are also some episodes that do not deal with the gangster (or only tangentially) but with other crime.

Not high brow, the cops shoot pretty straight, the bad guys don't. Plots not intricate since they wrap up each episode.

But, for me, very easy, and enjoyable watching set in an era I like to see.

Well, we've just finished watching War and Peace and I absolutely loved it - Mr.VS wasn't so keen. The series we watched was in six parts, so shorter episodes to reduce Mr.VS's grumps!

Now watching Dr. Thorne, which is showing now so we have to wait a week for each episode. It's a Trollope classic. I've read most of his famous novels (he did write rather a lot), and this is my particular favourite. It's beautifully produced, and, in typically Trollope style, has an element of humour in it. Mr.VS prefers this to the Russians and (reluctantly) I agree with him.

I'm a little late to the party on this one as I just watched the first season (of three), but for those into horror flicks Penny Dreadful from Showtime will certainly fill the bill.

During season 1 viewers are introduced to Vampires and Van Helsing, demons and demonic possession, Victor Frankenstein plus two of his creations, and a werewolf. I'm in early season two now and witches as well as the bride of Frankenstein have been added to the mix. I'm expecting "the Mummy" and "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" to show up shortly!

Anyway, if this sort of thing is your cup of tea (or cup of blood as may be the case) it's pretty well done with some well known actors.

Warning; contains a lot of graphic blood, gore and violence along with the "make you jump" and "make the hair on the back of your neck stand up" moments.

A long time ago on here Sandman told me several times that I should stop watching programs like Game of Thrones and Spartacus on True Visions because of the editing. He was right. In preparation for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones I decided to watch the entire first 5 seasons here (on demand) this past week. I was amazed at the difference. Watching it there I was frequently confused by the story line. Now I know why... it was the Thai editing. It's a much better show when you see all of it.

Now for Spartacus...
