Do insurance policies include courtesy car while car off road?
Mrs D-M has just written off our Vigo (she's okay) somewhere near Chumphon.
She's dealing with the insurance from there, but what I'd like to know before I speak to her again is - does what I'd call fully comprehensive insurance cover replacement car rental in these circumstances?
Don't ask me for any info about the insurance company or policy, as all the paperwork is with the car.
Any advice appreciated.

Re: Is car rental covered by insurance?
I think (don't know) that a lot of the smaller companies have first class insurance, which doesn't cover them for rental purposes. The big boys such as Avis, Budget etc do have insurance, but you pay dearly for it. Our own sponsor used to be covered by proper insurance (confirmed here some time ago), so I'd presume they still are.
I think your question is a bit of a minefield, and you're not likely to find out until you've had an accident. I guess a simple precaution is not to admit its a hire car, and let the hire company sort it out.
I will admit, I've hired a few cars with dubious insurance when the more reputable hire companies couldn't help me .

Sorry BB, but you didn't read my post. I'm not asking about insurance for hire cars, but whether the cost of hiring a replacement car is included in the policy for your own car.
EDIT: The thread has a misleading title - sorry about that.

Sorry to state the obvious, which I am sure you have done, but did you call the agent that sold you the policy?
I know you said all paperwork is in the car but perhaps a payment stub, etc may lead you to them?

Thanks GLCQ, it's beginning to look a bit miraculous that she's not suffering anything worse than whiplash...GLCQuantum wrote:Sorry to hear that Dtaii Maii... glad she's okay.
She stayed in the car for a few minutes while she worked out if she was okay. Her helpers thought they were going to find a body.
Fortunately she received lots of help from a number of good-hearted souls, not including the tosser that ran her off the road, who disappeared at top speed.

Goodness, she must be made of tough stuff to come out of that pretty unscathed! Something must have been on her side. Hope she get's the affects of an accident like that okay and I don't mean just physically.

^^Yes, good point, of course. She is not surprisingly quite shaken up and emotional, as well as being stuck on her own in the middle of nowhere (the road between Chumphon and Ranong). A friend is picking her up early tomorrow to bring her home.
I should probably also take this opportunity to mention that it's turning into a bit of an 'annus horribilis', as we lost a baby in June, only 6 weeks before he was due.

Regretfully not one company will cover for a replacement car while your car is under repair. I know a few years ago one company started a a test in greater Bangkok for this, but they stopped after a while. And i can see why. For some reason it is still very hard to predict how long a repair will take here in Thailand. If she was not at fault in the accident, she/you can claim it on the person that was at fault, you can even go court for that. Usually that does not make much sense however, and the insurance will never be a part in this.
Luckily she came out fine.

Bloody hell! Only just seen the pictures.
Echo the sentiments above wishing her a speedy recovery and hope that you can find a car to use for the meantime.

Me too. That must have shook her up fairly, poor lass.
Looks like the courtesy car's a no, no. How about buying a cheapy car (the Honda City in the ads, or something cheaper) to tide you over? Insurance companies are notoriously tardy when it comes to paying out money, especially so when living in the land where nothing gets done in a hurry. You would probably not lose a lot if you could sell the banger on when you eventually get a pay out. Just a thought...
Good luck, mate.

Just re-read each post. I'd somehow missed the part about your baby, Dtaai Maai. "When it rains, it pours", they say. Chin up mate. Stiff upper lip...
