Tourists Driving/Riding in Hua Hin
Re: Tourists Driving/Riding in Hua Hin
I agree, if you break the law and you get stopped, ask for a ticket or pay on the spot. Either way, you are going to pay. Whether I pay on the spot or not is of no importance to me. If Thailand has a corruption problem, then it's up to them to deal with it. None of my business really, so convenience comes first, at least when it only involves trivial offences.

Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
Re: Tourists Driving/Riding in Hua Hin
I've never had a problem around Hua Hin but I've been stopped for "speeding" around Bangkok when I knew I hadn't been. After it had happened a few times at the same spot, we went to the police station to see the speed camera pictures that they claimed to have and they just laughed and sent us away. There is no scamming; people breaking the law get stopped and fined, if you choose to pay a bribe to avoid a ticket that's up to you, otherwise just demand a ticket.

Did you present a valid international car/motorcycle license ?robcar wrote:I got pulled last year for not having IDP...........400baht. I was stopped again in the same place (MV) 2 days later, I argued that I was on holiday and there was no chance of getting IDP until I went back to UK. They let me off with a warning on that one.

In my opinion you can hire the car in Hua Hin. My dad is also planning to visit there to hire a luxury car and one of his friends told him about car hiring. Anyway, currently I am getting driving lessons from a domestic Driving School. After getting the license I would plan a road trip with my friends!

Really, accidents happen everyday everywhere in the world.... I drive all the time in Thailand and even have a Motorcycle (not a motorbike)... A lot of what I have witnessed on the roads are the motorbikes and their lack of following any form of the law... Yes there are knuckleheads driving cars and trucks that don't do any justice to the concerns weighed in on here... However, driving in Thailand is doable and safe if you take it easy and don't try to be the "winner" getting to your destination... I did a multi-hop journey back a few months wound up being over 3500KM and yes saw so crazy stuff, Yes I drive fast, but I also pay attention to what is going on around me.. Driving at night and yes I have done that too, raises the stakes... So I limit that to only when I must, do I travel long distances... See and hear about too many accidents that should not have happened for all kinds of reasons... Best to travel in daylight to see what is out there in front of you before you find it the hard way...

... and they happen at different rates in different places. That's what makes some safer than others.BOZ wrote:Really, accidents happen everyday everywhere in the world....

Very sad but true!!! Couldn't agree more Homer.... But not driving because things happen more in LOS is sadder when you give up a great freedom of mobility!!
