Sarge,

It might be a good idea to remember that not everyone on this forum speaks English as a native language. Norseman's English is extremely good, but, as his username suggests, he may not be English. Maybe he doesn't know the abbreviation - S.O.B? Sure, dane48 knows what you're on about, but that depends on who you learn from. I know a lot of Thai swear words, but can't put too many sentences together, thanks to who I learnt my limited Thai from

Baa Baa i took it the same as dane 48
sorry if not so
Dawn you are correct of course but in my defence i was more than happy to explain it to norseman when asked :D
You have helped me with some abbreviations on another thread

On a more serious point i have had absolutely no joy getting a thai lawyer to take the highly recommended lawyer to court to get my money back even with all the reciepts
hence the humour about holding his son as collateral because i only have my sense of humour to fall back on
I wont see my money again but at least i have had a larf sorry to those that didnt see the funny side
Humour is my defence mechanism against things i still dont understand about thais and thailand even after 22 years, it stops me going doolally (MAD) :?

As for thai swear words i am quite good at them maybe when we fnally meet we could update/swap a few mine are getting a bit worn now :D :D

sam wrote:Hi everyone, sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but here goes, we are in the process of employing a lawyer from Bangkok to assist in our house purchase/ land lease ( lawyers recommended buy British embassy) They have requested full payment(112,500 )upfront, is this common practise or like UK billed after work is done?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
I paid a very expensive Sathorn Road corporate legal firm to handle my house purchase. I insisted on a ;arge amount of extra work that finally proved perhaps not so necessary.

I had both a Thai Lawyer and an Australian Farang Lawyer

I paid 3 months after completion and the final filgure was jsut over 100,000

I'd say your were paying too much unless you are purchasing a very large property and you really want to check deeply into the ownership of the land, and the financial standing of the people you are buying from.

Same problem here.
A few years back i paid a thai lawyer up front only for it to take 2 months to do something that should have taken him 2 days.
Shop around and pay half.

Hi Sam
Sorry if I have read your post wrong but you mention land lease. If you're only leasing the land then there is no need to set up a company and certainly no need to work through a lawyer. Trust me on that, it is dead easy and pretty straight forward doing it all yourself and it will hardly cost you anything at all.

Good luck

Thanks to all for replies. We had already set a company up in August, now for sale, however we decided to have peace of mind and lease (it actually works out cheaper than renting). the cost's quoted by the lawyer Siam Global were for the lease!!! This has all been resolved now though thanks to our fantastic and ever helpful builder who has had a basic lease drawn up and reccomended various
lawyers at much more sensible prices for any changes we want.

Thanks again for all the interest, it's nice to know there is so much help out there.
