Cabbages & Condoms

Post by PeteC »

For those familiar with the Pattaya resort of the above name, it has now been changed to The Birds & Bees Resort. The restaurant on the grounds remains Cabbages & Condoms.

Apparently many in cyberland were thinking it was some kind of whore house with that name, so the owner Senator Mechai Viravaidya recently changed it.

To clarify,Condoms = HIV prevention and birth control. Cabbages = sustainable, higher value crops other than rice.

You can find the full story at the below link. Great cause and very interesting man. Pete

Hi Pete, there is a Cabbages and Condoms Hotel just outside Nang Rong, near where I have a house in Nong Ki. I had always wandered what it was all about, my partner had told me that there was nothing dodgy about it, but I could never understand where the name came from.
I see on the site they have a presence in the area, so now I know!

I don't know if he'll be changing the name of that one also? Maybe not as upcountry. A name like that in Pattaya though attracts flies. Pete

You sure you've got this right?

I just booked there and all corresposndence with the resort was under the name C&C but the restaurant name was changed to The Birds and The Bees.

Stayed there a few times now. Fine food, great views, an oasis in the madness of Pattaya.

They haven't updated their web site yet nor made the total transition. We were just there for three days over LK. You'll see when you check in from the new signs etc. There's a great new kids pool also and two new family suites that were just built over this past low season. Interesting that we live in North Pattaya but escape to this place to relax a few times a year...oh the madness!!!...LOL. Pete

This is Thailand, The last consideration is marketing if at all.

A sad loss of a classic name although I think that the new one will generate even more controversy.

Most hasn't changed, Guess. Coffee cup's with condom pics on them, door mats in the room with catchy saying's like "save energy..get a vasectomy..", free condoms in a bowl at the restaurant check out and in every room. As my little 14 month old was crawling around on the floor of the room, she was collecting them from the night tables and putting them into her pockets... SLOW DOWN GIRL!..plently of time for that later! All is done in good taste though.

A wonderful place, the most peaceful I've found anywhere near here, with the Sugar Hut a close second, which is owned by the brother of the man who owns the CC. Pete

My distant memories of Pattaya come flooding back.

The Sugar Hut rings many bells but I can not place exactly.

I was involved in Pool leagues and Quiz leagues in Pattaya and got to many places that I would not have been to otherwise. Many of those were. I will have do go there again, but never made it gategory.

The Sugar Hut is a fine place too, with a good restaurant, though it lacks the seaviews and water.

Still, a bit hard to tell the firm I'm staying at C&C.

Roppongi, forgot to mention that they seem to have changed their in-room telephone policy. Now, you cannot get an outside line directly, you have to go through the operator who will dial. Shades of hotels here 20 years ago. This means impossible to connect to the internet from the comfort of your room with your laptop. There is an internet cafe though in the lobby. I forgot to ask upon check out if this is just a minor maintenance problem or, a permanent policy. Pete

Same silly problem last time with phone calls.

The Internet they offer guests is snails pace. Best to go to Free Drop up the road.
