Loy Krathong Hua Hin 2014

Post by jonny_ »

Hey folks,

I wonder where is the best place to celebrate Loy Krathong in Hua Hin. I attended this fantastic festival twice. Once in Bangkok and once in Chiang Mai  . I loved both, but Chiang Mai was just stunning with all those laterns, released at the river side. Is there something similar in Hua Hin. Where is you favourite place to go?

Thanks for your insights!

Last year Khao Tao was the place to go. Keep watching this page as I'm sure it will be updated as the event gets closer.

Thanks BB, I have never found a satisfactory place. I tried the floating market and it wasn't bad, but quiet. The beaches are busy but I don't like the fact your Kratong gets washed back. Will give it a try ;-)

Be warned though, the traffic last year was the stupidest I've seen in Thailand (there is a report it on here. When we got there a few hours later, there was nowhere to park (we did get lucky). The event itself was very good.

Since we're talking about this early, It's on 7 November this year, 10 days earlier than last year. A Friday night as well so imagine it will be well attended if the Bangkok folk have time to get down there after work. Pete

After last year's utter road madness, I for one will go to watch the Hua Hin Parade, but will definitely avoid Khao Tao - watching idiots driving full speed into oncoming traffic has made a lasting impression on me.

Our only Loy Krathong in Thailand we did the restaurant package at the Menam Riverside in BKK (discounted thanks to BIL)

It was nice to have the dinner, show, send the krathongs, then walk to the room.

Anyone know of a nicely done package?

Is there any sort of public transport from/to the city?

We always used to book a big table at the Sofitel beach restaurant for the family, very convenient for letting the krathongs loose in the sea, then back to the table for dinner.

No hassles fighting the traffic or the mobs and plenty of parking.

Even if there is, which I doubt, it would need to be a helicopter to get through the traffic madness.

Yes, you are correct, thanks for the update. I had picked up the headline from Phuket.com where they seem to celebrate it on the 7th. http://www.phuket.com/festival/loy_krathong.htm

 Thanks to the both of you. I've been assuming the date of 17 Nov 14 published in another Hua Hin publication was correct - embarrassing  .

I think you need to check BB when HH will have their parade etc. I've been looking around on different sites and many still state the 7th for what a particular locale is doing, and some celebrate both nights of the full moon which are the 6th and 7th.

I'm waiting for local events to be published. As soon as I see any, I will share.

I still find it hard to believe that a well known Hua Hin publication is putting out such misleading information - people plan holidays around festivals - some may be disappointed.
