Sargeant, one less taxi to rip us off anyway:
The Nation.
A taxi driver was in critical condition Saturday after slamming his car into a tank in Bangkok's Royal Plaza to protest the military council that seized the power from Thaksin government.
The driver, Nuamthong Praiwan, said he painted the words "Destroy the country" on the side of his taxi, and the word "Suicide" on the trunk, before speeding into one of the tanks parked at the Royal Plaza.
"I did it intentionally to protest the junta that have destroyed our country, and I painted all the words by myself," he said from his bed.
Nuamthong suffered broken ribs and injuries to his chin and his eye.
A police however downplayed the incident, saying the driver was drunk and no message was sprayed on the taxi. "I didn't see any spray-painted words. Initially police suspected the driver might have fallen asleep, or it could have been reckless driving," police said.
The words painted on the car were however visible in photographs and television images of the taxi.
Taxi drivers are among the strong supporters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's populist policies.
The military deposed Thaksin last month while he was in New York.

Glitches continue at new airport
Minor problems continued to plague the new Suvarnabhumi Airport Sunday, four days after the airport's commercial opening, with soldiers called in to help carry passenger baggage as machines proved too slow. And then, a large number of sightseers turned up, causing congestion and inconvenience at the single-terminal airport.
An operations centre, informally dubbed 'the war room,' has been set up on the seventh floor of the passenger building and 25 soldiers were drafted to help move baggage, while Thai Airports Ground Service Co. Ltd. (TAGS) has dispatched another 150 baggage-transport carts to help speed up the work, said Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya.
He said work flexibility has been achieved at only 70% and the remaining problem of 30% is resulted from staff members who have become very tired.
Although the airport has been opened for four days as of Sunday, as many as 100,000 people are turning up daily for pleasure visits, while the number of passengers is estimated at 80,000 - 90,000 persons, Mr. Chotisak said, adding that the number of cleaners and rubbish collectors must be increased.
Many toilets in the domestic passenger terminal have become clogged, he said, while the roof of the car park is not expected to be complete for about one month, he said.
Many black-plated taxis were seen waiting for customers on the first and second floors of the passenger building yesterday, Mr. Chotisak said. Police have been asked to order taxi drivers not to park their vehicles in the area, he said.
Mr. Chotisak said officials will be assigned to monitor expected heavy rainfall Sunday night, but indicated there should not be a problem as the new airport can absorb as much as three million cubic metres of water.
The Meteorological Department earlier warned that Typhoon Xangsane, which earlier devastated the Philippines, would enter Vietnam and Thailand Sunday. The storm was expected to trigger another round of heavy rainfall, especially in northeastern provinces.
Meanwhile, a senior Thai Airways International executive said Sunday that work at the airport have become smoother, although more casual visitors are congesting the airport, especially during the weekend.
These admirers are causing inconvenience for passengers checking in. The executive asked people to refrain from visiting the airport for the time being in order to make for smoother service.

SIGHTSEERS URGED TO STAY AWAY
Entire families come to see off a single relative
AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK and WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM Bangkok Post Reporters
Locals stop to admire a panaramic view of the new Suvarnabhumi airport, which is competing with the army's tanks as the hottest sightseeing attraction in town.
Sightseers, unable to resist their children's calls, throng to the airport in large numbers.
Last week it was a tank, this week it is Suvarnabhumi airport for parents taking their children on days out.
But sightseers have been asked to give the airport a break after traffic was clogged, food shops sold out, and family picnics were spotted here and there - particularly yesterday, a Saturday.
''Please. There is no need to hurry. Suvarnabhumi will be here for decades. Next year is never too late [for admirers],'' Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya said.
Mr Chotisak admitted Suvarnabhumi had encountered an unexpected problem. Whole families have been going to send off a relative and get up close and personal with Thailand's latest pride. Some go just for pleasure.
Officials were entrusted to speed up the traffic flow and discourage family group photos and picnics on the road in and out of the airport. Traffic cones were placed along the curve of the exit to Rom Klao road, which is said to be a great scenic spot to capture the beautiful angles of the terminal and airplanes coming in and out of runways.
The atmosphere is much more pleasant outside, where hundreds simply enjoy the view from afar.
As an airplane roared while descending onto a runway, the crowd cheered on. The plane flew above sightseers who packed the elevated Kingkaew road running alongside the airport.
''Look! The plane is so huge. There is smoke spewing from the wheels when it touches down,'' said truck driver Thanapol Suwanchart, 35, who took his wife and daughter to see a plane landing for the first time.
He said he was so impressed that he would work harder so that one day he could afford to fly with his family from Suvarnabhumi, which ''is as grand as advertised''.
Yo! This is a typical Thai Tick (among other Ticks we Thais have) everything New and everything that has a Bling Bling effect we Thai's must flock and have a look and take our families to take Photos have a Family Picnic there. I had expireinced this with the BTS when it was opened in 1999 The Siam Paragon which opened late last year and many other new places. I had seen the streams of people visiting Siam Paragon when it opened the first weekend but what happened @ Suyarnabhumi Airport tops even that.!!!
As I heard over 30000 People visited the Airport just yesterday alone and all Restaurants overthere where packed full with families WOW! when all the hype had subsided you'll see a diffrent aspect hopping into Suvanrabhum Hype Bandwagon as well. Soon we will see flocks of Thai Soap Drama Production Teams and Thai Music Artist wanting shot to their MV's @ Suvarnabhum Airport if they hadn't done it allready though.
Wahnsinn! My friend just flew from Suvarnabhumi Airport to visit me here in L. A. and to lend me a hand on my extensive covering of the Us midterm Senate Elections here. Maybe he can report how the atmosphere really was like @ The Airport!

I'm in the lounge in Zurich airport at the moment, en route for Bangkok. When I checked in for my flight in Luxembourg there was much confusion, phone calls, and gnashing of teeth by the check-in staff, who asked me three times where I was going.
When I asked them what the problem was they showed me the boarding pass which just states the destination as Suvarnabhumi Intl., with no mention of Bangkok.
Luckily, having read all of the posts here, I was able to inform them of the fact that this was the new Bangkok airport that had opened on thursday.
They were completely surprised by, this and had absolutely no idea that this had happened.

Airport chief expects more foreign arrivals at year-end
Airports of Thailand’s President Chotisak Asapaviriya on Sunday voiced confidence more foreign tourists would visit Thailand at end of this year since 10 more airliners expressed intention to land at the Suvarnabhumi Airport.
He said the official inauguration of the airport on September 28 is a proper decision because the Bangkok International Airport at Don Muang could not accommodate the increased number of passengers.
Also, should the Suvarnabhumi Airport open in November or December, the transfer would be more difficult since it is a high season period.
By the end of this year, he projected the number of foreign tourists would increase since the company had been informed by around 10 more airliners of their intention to land at the new airport.
At the same time, he said, the company had been praised by many airlines that services at the airport are gradually put in place and improve.
On news reports of cargo transfer problems, Mr. Chotisak denied a lot of cargoes are left in terminals at present.
He conceded many cargoes were shipped to the airport’s terminals on Saturday because AoT had waived cargo fees for two months.

Good Afternoon to everyone including our very dedicated Suvaranabhum Airport Correspondent Bas.
With so many Good and Bad things said about the New Suvarnabhumi International Airport does anyone have any last thoughts on the for the now closed Don Muang International Airport? This Tribute to the 92 year old comes rather late cause it closed on the Sept. 28 when Suvarnabhum Interantional took over on the same day. It sometimes takes some time to re-arrange thoughts your thoughts you had towards the old Airport.
during my childhood years when I took of from Don Muang International I thought of the Terminal 1 of a somehow old not comfy place to fly from this change however when they openend the rather hastely build Terminal 2 with new computer and check in Areas. Still I had the feeling of the rather old mid 70's design Interior. this feeling was particulary strong when I had Nightflights to Frankfurts.
FYI: Do you know That both Terminpsals had two seperate exits? When you come exit out of Customs tube you usually go right where all the people go to meet relatives, Catch a cab ect. but when you go right that's the exit for Tougroups of special chartered Tours.
It's tiime that Don Muang calls it a Day with 92 years it has done its work and now it's Suvarnabhumi turn to make history aehhh if it doesn't made it allready. with 42 years in planning and 5 years in building it. (Isn't it easier to concieve a Child than to build an Airport

Suvarnabhumi Airport Guide
If you follow the link below you'll find an interesting site about the airport. It has links down the left to maps of the facility. There is even a video which gives quite a lot of information on the structure itself.
It is pronounced "su-wan-na-poom" and means "Golden Peninsula"or "Golden Land" is a traditional name for the Thailand-Cambodia-Laos-Burma region.
