Motorcycle trip maps

Post by Hilux »

Having used a normal car navigation for the bike for some time, I finally got hold of a MC navigation unit (zumo 660). Basically I did not expect it to be much different other than it is waterproof, so I was plesantly surprised when I sat down at started to explore the thing.
first of all, I downloaded garmin basecamp (free download) and found out that it is just so easy to create a route, download it to the unit and the you are ready to go. After you have done the route you can even load you triplog back into basecamp and modify the route using that info - or simply create another route from it. I can only recomend those who have interest in this to download and try for yourselves. The only thing you need (except from basecamp) is a garmin map which can be either onyou garmin device or on a USB stick (also quite easy to find and download if you don't have it).
The big difference between creating a route and just giving a GPS a position to go to is that when you create a route you decide which way you ant to go to get to the position.
When you have created thea route it is also easy to share it with others - either using the same online account (free) or by uploading it to the garmin website as an "garmin adventure" as they call it.

I tried to make three routes (using data from triplogs from my phone), and it only took about 10 minutes each.

I have been doing that for years with the garmin Nuvi series which is not waterproof but cost only 3990 bahts and can be used on a motorcycle, although not waterproof.
I use Mapsource rather than Basemap, but both are fine.

Another interesting feature is that you can open the file containing your last trip with the track on it (name of the file is "current.gpx") and communicate it to others.

I agree that the Zumo is perfect, designed for bikes, but really expensive...

May want to resize those images - linking directly to the fullsize one messes up the thread layout for those with smaller screens.

Good to hear that some nuvi's also allows custom routes Gérard. Mine unfortunately didn't. If we could find a way of sharing routes that could be a great idea.

Sorry about that. Resized to 800px (width). Hopefully enough..
