Thailand: Udon Thani province: Killing of Dutch national during suspected robbery in Muang district underlines need to adopt sensible security precautions

Unidentified assailants on 1 March killed a Dutch national at his accommodation in Muang district (Udon Thani province). The police suspect robbery as the motive behind the murder. Preliminary investigations indicated that the victim, who owned two local bars, often carried significant cash on his person and had previously been targeted in robbery incidents. While the fatal robbery does not indicate increased risks to foreigners, it underscores the need for observing sensible security precautions at all times.

Travel Briefing

Violent crime targeting foreigners, while not completely unheard of, is relatively uncommon in Thailand. Most such incidents are related to personal disputes, involvement with criminal groups or association with the sex industry. While petty and opportunistic crime will continue to pose the principal risk to travellers, the latest incident highlights that violent robberies motivated by the perceived wealth of foreign nationals can occur. Travellers should therefore observe sensible security precautions and not resist or antagonise the attacker in the event of being accosted.

Travel Advice Summary

• Take sensible security precautions against the risk of petty and street crime.
• If accosted, do nothing to resist or antagonise the attacker/s as it could increase the risk of violence.
• Maintain a low profile; dress as inconspicuously as possible and avoid ostentatious displays of wealth.
• For further information on crime, refer to our travel security guide for the country.

I read this on the Bangkok Post website... No other updates there, where did you get the info on the bar manager??? Makes sense that the manager would know how much money was on him or in his home... sad now we have a dead man and a fool in prison for life.... Another criminal genesis.....

A Dutch man who owned 2 bars in Udon Thani province was found dead at his home. He had sustained stab wounds to his neck, hands, arms, and stomach. Police found him in his garden.

UDON THANI – March 1, 2014 [PDN]; at 8.00 a.m. the officers of Rom Pho Thong radio centre of Mueang Udon Thani police station were notified that there was the blood stain near a car beside house no. 180 Soi Phiboon, Non Phiboon community, Supphakitjanya, Udon Thani Municipality, so they assumed that there might be an injured person so Pol.Lt.Col. Kamol Uppakarat (Inspector police on duty of Mueang Udon Thni province) rushed to inspect at scene together with Udon Sawang Metha Tharmma Satharn Foundation and the doctor on duty of Udon Thani Center hospital.

At the incident was a 2-storied building with a white Toyota Camry, license number Kor Khor 9739 Udon Thani was parked blocking the front gate to the house. The officers found the blood stain along which went across the lawn in front of the house. They also found a key on the floor and found traces of dragging towards the back of the house where they found the corpse of a foreign man face up and covered in blood. He had stab wounds to his throat, arms, hands and stomach. Next to the body they found 1 wrist watch, 1 ring and some cards with his name on. The officers assumed that he had been dead approximately 7 hours.

Pol.Col. Kowit Charoenwatthanasak (Superintendent of Mueang Udon Thani police station) who went to inspect at the crime scene revealed that the deceased was identified as Mr. Fred Lelie, aged approximately 60, Dutch nationality, who was the owner of Model 59 bar in Soi Samphan and Butterfly bar at Land Mart department store in Tuk Com Udon. Upon questioning the foreign volunteer who takes care of the tourists who belonged to Udon Thani Tourism Police then Pol.Col. Kowit perceived that the deceased didn’t have many foreign friends so he just associated with his bar employees and many girlfriends. At approximately 11.00-12.00 p.m. every day Mr. Fred Lelie (the deceased) usually went to collect the bars takings and would kept all money in his shoes or beneath his socks due being robbed before. He would collect around 30,000-60,000 THB each night.

Pol.Col. Kowit also said that from inspecting the scene he found that all money that the deceased had hidden was missing. He assumed that the cause of this incident might be robbery . The police believe the deceased resisted the robbers who then killed him. He will assign a detective team to follow up to arrest the culprits to be prosecuted further according to the Thai law.

Udon Thani police have already arrested the manager of beer bar together with an ex-employee who murdered a Dutch male bar owner in Udon Thani Province. The arrested manager confessed he planned it with an ex-employee.

UDON THANI – March 3, 2014 [PDN]; at 11.30 a.m. Pol.Maj.Gen. Boonlue Korbangyang (Commander of Udon Thani Provincial police station), Pol.Capt. Surin Chaichomphu (Deputy Commander), Pol.Capt. Kowit Charoenwatthanasak (Superintendent) together with Pol.Maj. Ammarin Yuyen (Inspector) and Pol.Maj. Chalermchart Jankar (Inspector of Udon Thani Immigration Bureau) made a statement about the arrest of Mr. Natthaphong or Nat Boonyarit, aged 26, residing at house no. 325/10 Moo 7 Soi Ban Non Yang, Tambon Mark Khaeng, Amphur Mueang, Udon Thani Province and Mr. Wicharn or Aeng Kotchomphu, aged 36, residing at house no. 87 Moo 5 Tambon Ban Thorn, Amphur Thar Bor, Nong Khai Province, with the allegation of murder.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Boonlue revealed that after Mr Fred Lee was murdered on March 1st the police from Mueang Udon Thani police station coordinated with the tourism police and the immigration police knew that the defendants who planned to murder Mr. Fred was Mr. Natthaphong Boonyarit, who was the manager of Model 59 bar and it was in revenge due to (Mr. Fred Lelie, who was the bar owner) was going to sack him because Mr. Natthaphong didn’t submit the bars’ revenue to Mr. Fred on time. Mr. Fred was also expanding his business so Mr. Natthaphong wanted to take over the new business and contacted Mr. Wicharn Kotchomphu (who was an ex-employee that was fired by Mr. Fred who often said that he wanted to kill him) and asked him to kill Mr. Fred and then he would get 20% of the business profits from Model 59 bar and also 20% from the Butterfly bar (that the deceased was going to open).

On the incident day Mr. Natthaphong dropped Mr. Wicharn off at the house of Mr. Fred and waited until around 3.30 a.m. when Mr. Fred turned up in his white Toyota Camry, license number Kor Khor 9739 Udon Thani. Mr. Natthaphong followed Mr. Fred’s car and called Mr. Wicharn to say he was on his way home. When Mr. Fred arrived home Mr. Wicharn stabbed Mr. Fred’s in the waist, Mr. Fred attempted to fight back so Mr. Wicharn stabbed him repeatedly until Mr. Fred fell on the ground. Mr. Wicharn then slit his throat and stole his cash approximately 50,000 THB that was hidden in his shoes before getting on Mr. Natthaphong’s motorbike to go back home to get changed. He threw the knife used and clothes he wore into the canal behind Day Nine shop in Soi Samphan then they went back to move the corpse to hide it at the back of the deceased’s garden. But all their careful planning was to no avail because they were quickly arrested by the police.

I know you should not blame the victim but there is an obvious lesson. Driving around at 3am with high sums of money on your person, keeping large sums of money in your house, all very tempting.

Whilst that's good advice, it appears that the main issue was threatening to, or actually sacking the staff and they in turn resort to violence of the highest order. Anybody employing Thai staff should be very careful how they deal with staff who may not be performing as required.

Think back long term posters...........It's happened a few times in HH where the REAL reason for assault or death is pissing off Thai staff. Loss of face can promote violence

I've visited Udon quite a few times and used to frequent that club. It was better priced and had a nicer atmosphere than the rival Mr Tongs bar a few doors down. Fred was usually perched outside on a stool keeping watch and chatted to him a couple of times so it was a nasty shock when I started seeing the gruesome pics all over social media when the news broke the other day.
