Interestingly enough, Australia Broadcasting Corp., had a show on cable last night about a team of Welsh sheep-shearers now in Oz to compete in a competition. They gave themselves about 10 days to practice, as the sheep to be used are Merrino(sp) where the fleece is apparently much longer/thicker than sheep from Wales. The Aussies paid many verbal tributes to that squad and actually seemed to think they may win the whole thing?Jaime wrote:I have sent you a sheep for your amusement. They interviewed an Australian shearer and a Welsh shearer at the same time and what the hell...trying to understand the English coming out of the two was a challenge, especially when they interrupted each other. Anyway, too many sheep and too much ABC, I fell asleep, don't know how it turned out, we'll have to ask Chelsea. Pete

Don't worry Pete, you yanks will eventually learn how to speak and understand the language properly but it may take some time yet!prcscct wrote:They interviewed an Australian shearer and a Welsh shearer at the same time and what the hell...trying to understand the English coming out of the two was a challenge, especially when they interrupted each other.

Unfortunately I'm starting to doubt my own nationality. The whole place is foreign to me now, mentality, politics, values. But...that's for another thread.Jaime wrote:Don't worry Pete, you yanks will eventually learn how to speak and understand the language properly but it may take some time yet!
Honestly speaking, I think the South Africans speak the best dialect of English I've ever heard. Truly smooth and pleasant, IMHO. To keep it on thread, I'll call it Neo-English

I too find the English South African accent (nit really a dialect) quite pleasing to the ear and easy to understand. That is not trhe case with Afrikaans speakers attempting to speak English though.prcscct wrote:[

Ther are some accent that I do not particualarly dislike but cannot understand, two that spring to mind are Noo Joisey and Newcasssle. MOst welsh is OK until they start singing.
Number one and two for me have to be South Dublin and the Hague.
PS. CA is quite easy on the ear. And BTW good luck for your bid fo independence I will give it my full support. Parts of LA could do with a biulldozing first though. Any displace persons could just be shoved across the border to Area 51.

There is no need for wellies. Real men do it barefoot.Big Boy wrote:Jaime wrote:Thanks Jaime, much appreciated.
