'knew when to stop' as in adhering, more or less, to cultural norms. Thai cultural norms. I quoted blue05's post where 'knew when to stop' appeared to mean relative to his cultural norms. Judging people in other cultures by one's own culture makes one .... is there a word for that? Preferably an offensive one?tonymaroni wrote:Sorry do not follow that one. "They knew when to stop" as in when they think it looks like he is beaten enough and will need brain surgery.

It's unlike you to be lost for an offensive word, Homer, though I fail to see why one is necessary.Homer wrote: .... is there a word for that? Preferably an offensive one?

4 a.m. seems to be a dangerous hour to be out and about..
A year ago we had a lethal Thai on Thai shooting in soi Selakam, at a similar hour..
However, a question for the mods.....
This is a serious and criminal news story, and not tourist babble -
So why has this thread been left open, whilst the one in 'News' has been shut down??

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

U Tom : The answer is in the locked thread. This thread was posted first so it was a duplicate post a day later hence it was locked.

OK, should probably have been in news anyway.
For the future, while we try our best to keep things in order, if you spot a problem, click the red exclamation mark, and report it that way. The exclamation highlights things to us much faster.

In many countries you cannot be held for over 24h unless charges are made against you.
But you can be held for23h and59 mins and police will often do this. Usually lock them up till morning and then give the parents pages and pages and pages of paper work to complete before release, very effective.
Yes, in RSA it was much the same. The police couldn't keep you for more than 24 hours so they would just keep you overnight, and your parents would be called in the morning to fill out loads of paper work. Just a pity they don't throw the parents in the cells for a while as well.
I only have daughters so maybe things will be easier for me than they would be if I had sons, but there is no way on this earth that my kids would be getting up to nonsense like this without me finding out. Fortunately (or unfortunately), my kids have a pretty crazy Dad that's been around the block enough times to know when something isn't right.
As I've said on the forum before, all this softly softly nonsense where kids can no longer be punished is not going to create a better society. If you big and tough enough to hang around on the streets beating up people in the early hours of the morning, then in my books you're big and tough enough to get a damn good hiding as well, or at least a meaningful form of punishment.
Anyway, I hope the victim pulls through.

Sorry, I also meant to add......... Uncle Tom, tourists have every right to know about things like this. The victim was probably a tourist himself as well. If Thailand wants to attract tourists, then they need to get off their asses and show that they actually care about the safety of tourists. The last I heard, there are tourist police in Hua-Hin, so how do gang of yobs get to roam about freely in a very tourist orientated area without being chased away?
Sorry I forgot, mai pen rai.

That's one of the problems with policing here in Thailand....it's reactive and not pro-active. I see little evidence of attempts to stop crime before it happens and just mainly see the meat wagons and the 'brush-it-under-the-carpet' squad. As for tourist police, I'm almost surprised when I see them as if they are a rare breed.
Dream on Mr. T, just wait till scooter boy starts taking an unhealthy interest in them. Got a shotgun?

A lot of these 'farangs getting sorted by Thais' issues are often due to the farang deciding to get involved in a fracas causing provocation. Just heard on the jungle drums of a farang being threatened with a gun on soi 80.
Seems many farangs quite clearly (when well oiled) think they are able to take on Thais whether young, old, katoeys. BG's or Thai lads.
Moral? stay cool and back off.
As an 'alien' you don't stand a chance. Tourists and the like should be made aware of the dangers of provoking or insulting a Thai IMO. Those of us who have lived here for a long spell know the consequences

Very true Richard. The police in Thailand are not there to help and protect, they are there to make money. If you get attacked or get your house broken into, they dont care.
Just 2 weeks ago, the guy renting my house went berserk. He was screaming at all the neighbours, breaking all his stuff, throwing it all in the street. He injured 1 neighbour and then took his gas cylinder out into the street and tried to blow it up. Police were not interested. The Tourist Police did come though and took him away to the hospital.
There have been a few high profile murders ,or attempted murders, that have been solved only because outsiders were brought in to solve them. The local police have no interest.

So you're planning to take on any gangs your daughters may get involved with? And you're hoping they'll be worried about the fact that you're protective?Takiap wrote:Yes, but I try not to think about that yet, and hopefully when they get to that age, they'll be able to warn scooter boy that their dad is not the average sort of dad. Maybe a "cool" dad, but also a very protective one.
