That's a catapult too (a big one mind you), but that's the way it is with us quirky Brits!!hhfarang wrote:Then what do you call the one in the first photo that your king's armies used to use to storm French castles?I think it depends where you grew up HHF - what you call a slingshot in the US, has always been called a catapult in the UK.

The big gravity driven ones were called a Trebuchet - think fixed heavy artillery or siege mortars like Thor. Didnt move once put up
The smaller torsion catapults like the model in the photo were called a Mangonel - think mobile howizer. Could be dragged around the battle field.

Best cure for birds is a cat. Keeps the birds away, keeps you company as well.

I couldn't agree with you more SM...I love cats, so intelligent and great company. Our old tabby hated birds and used to chase them, not kill them which was good. He would make this strange twitching face with whiskers standing on end when he spotted one was on the lawn. He lived until he was 21 yrs. Cats will do their fair share of keeping them at bay. Very good idea.sandman67 wrote:Best cure for birds is a cat. Keeps the birds away, keeps you company as well.

We've got a bit of a Mynah bird invasion going on at the moment. The cheeky buggers come into the house looking for food, realise they cant get out as easy and proceed to spray the place in shit.
Anything to keep them at bay? Tried hanging CDs, pellet guns, catapults, the dogs ignore them ...

Dont think our two dogs would agree with that.

I purchased one of these
We live on a waterfront development the block of apartments in front of our house had sea gulls nesting and at dawn 03.45 they would make hell of a racket so I placed my plastic owl on the kitchen balcony and yes it works for a few days but you need to move it around every couple of days.
Kendo.

Yeah, I agree with Dannie, screen it in. Little else will deter them. Owl statues won't work, a gang of them attacked a live owl at my place a few months ago. They have no fear. If you have a cat they'll just sit in a tree and squawk at it. When it leaves they'll go back to what they were doing.
Philosophically though, you could have a monkey problem instead.

Talking of Mynah birds........ We get several of them visiting but one pair in particular makes a point of returning every once in a while, and one of them has sort of adopted me. If I walk around in the garden it follows me, bouncing along behind me, and even comes inside and stands about two foot away staring at me when I'm busy on the computer. Seriously, he/she acts like a pet, and then after a day or so it's gone until the next visit. Really quite strange if you could see it.

Re: Tips to keep an inordinate amount of birds away from hou
We have been plagued by a bunch of noisy crows that start their Cawing at 5am every morning.
The noise is deafening! Whilst I would never intentionally harm any type of animal or bird, these things are driving me nuts.
Lots of people had suggestions on how to get rid of them, including cutting down my trees!!!
The best advice has been to hang CDs in the garden, apparently crows don't like shiny reflective movements. Three weeks later and it seems to be working. I have heard an odd Caw, but there is no longer a "dawn chorus"
Apparently, crows are an extremely intelligent species so they will probably eventually figure the CDs are harmless. In the meantime, I am enjoying the peace.

If the birds are roosting on your roof or guttering your option is to get razor wire installed up there...I did it when pigeons were using my roof to congregate on and a pest controller suggested to do that...bottom line it worked as the birds can't stand in the one place as it damages their feet..problem solved!!

Yes the pigeons are a nuisance, they start their annoying mumblings early in the morning, may invest in a slug gun,not to harm them just scare them away, back to Bill Lawrys home?Sydney Jed wrote:If the birds are roosting on your roof or guttering your option is to get razor wire installed up there...I did it when pigeons were using my roof to congregate on and a pest controller suggested to do that...bottom line it worked as the birds can't stand in the one place as it damages their feet..problem solved!!
