can anyone tell me if the train from bkk is any good?

I think you need to to specify your criteria for good.
In general they leave Bangkok on time. They usually arrive in Hua Hin late. I normally travel 2nd class, which is OK, and reasonably priced. You could choose wooden seats in 3rd, or a lot nicer in 1st. Some services are air conditioned, but most have open windows. There's always a stream of hawkers selling food and drink.
