Thai driving license in Hua Hin
Re: Driving license
When I got my first Thai licence, I too had been driving on an International licence. However, when I went to the licence centre, they were only interested in my UK licence.

Re: Driving license
Well tues night I downloaded the AA application form for an international driving permit based on the 1949 agreement, there is another based on an earlier 1926 agreement I believe. But their website claims the 1949 agreement applies to LOS. On wed I sourced a photobooth at a SAINSBURYS branch and got 5 passport approved pics for a fiver. Also that day I photocopied my passport information page with the pic.then also my drivers license photocard, back and front along with the paper counterpart.I then signed the back.I made a cheque out for £12 consisting of a standard £5.50 for the permit £2.50 postage and as I want it before the 10th of sept(my flight out of GLA date) £4 for a priority processing with a quicker turnaround. I also had to stick in the envelope a self addressed envelope of a certain size in order to get the permit delivered.
Why did I do all this ? well I think I might need a moped for a few days to get me down to linns for a fish tea roundabout the middle of my holiday.......hahahahahaha.....why else ?

Re: Driving license
As my experience was years ago, I really don't remember what they asked for (through my wife in Thai of course) but I did present both my U.S. license and my international one and they examined both. It could be that if I had only given them the U.S. license the outcome would have been the same as in your case BB.When I got my first Thai licence, I too had been driving on an International licence. However, when I went to the licence centre, they were only interested in my UK licence.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Driving license
My experience was a century ago - 1994. No IDP and only the UK paper licence. I had to take the driving test - I thought that was because the UK licence had no picture. Good for a laugh. Watched the woman before me on the test course do absolutely everything wrong - and she still got the pass slip. Obviously she'd paid the 500 baht facilitation fee.hhfarang wrote:As my experience was years ago, I really don't remember what they asked for (through my wife in Thai of course) but I did present both my U.S. license and my international one and they examined both. Re: Driving license
Last week I went to Pranburi to renew my 5 year licence(s). I had to bring evidence of my address from HH immigration, plus a copy of my passport details page, my Non O visa page, my entry stamp page and my white exit slip. Double everything if you want a bike licence as well. I also showed my old licences.
I had to do the one hour Thai road safety lecture, luckily no test on this.
I had to do the colour test and passed despite being slightly colour blind. It's a chart similar to the Ishihara book, but there is no numbers. They are only interested in you picking out the traffic light colours.
There is a brake response test, where you react to a red light on a foot pedal setup.
Also a depth perception test where there is one stationary light and one moving behind it. When the furthest is at the same level as the stationary one you release a button.
Apparently the days of just showing up with the paperwork and doing nothing else, are gone.
We arrived at 1pm and were out before 3pm.

Re: Driving license
I also went to HH Immigration today and obtained the letter proving who I was and proving that I lived where I said I lived. That cost 800 Baht. Why is this necessary when my passport clearly states who I am, in fact that's where HH Immigration get my details from. The letter also stated where I live. Again, why is this necessary when the "Blue Book" clearly shows where I live.a10ams wrote:Last week I went to Pranburi to renew my 5 year licence(s). I then had to get a medical certificate from my doctor. This cost 800 baht as well. The doctor took my blood pressure and asked if I felt OK......800 Baht ??
These fees are extortionate and unnecessary, and yes, I know the first response will probably be TIT- This is Thailand, but that doesn't alter a bad situation.
Re: Driving license
I'm afraid it is more of a case of TIHH (This Is Hua Hin), the address letter for a driving license can be obtained for free at the police station (not in Hua Hin though) and the medical form is a standard issue one which ranges in cost from 50 to 100 baht (also not in Hua Hin).Bernard wrote: These fees are extortionate and unnecessary, and yes, I know the first response will probably be TIT- This is Thailand, but that doesn't alter a bad situation.

Re: Driving license
If you are renewing a 5 year license I do not think you need the medical cert - well that was the case last yearBernard wrote:I also went to HH Immigration today and obtained the letter proving who I was and proving that I lived where I said I lived. Re: Driving license
I needed one at Pranburi in August. Mind you, it only cost me 100 Baht.PET wrote:If you are renewing a 5 year license I do not think you need the medical cert - well that was the case last year
Also, I only paid 500 Baht for the proof of where I lived.

Re: Driving license
I renewed both my car and motorcycle licence this year, at different times, and needed a medical cert on both occasions. This was in Bangkok and the cost of a medical cert was 100 baht on each occasion. If you could prove that you were breathing, unaided, you got the medical cert, probably if you were not breathing someone could have collected it for youPET wrote:If you are renewing a 5 year license I do not think you need the medical cert - well that was the case last year
