Re: GBP vs THB
And there is a clear indication of bigger house price increases since the collapse back in 2008, in most parts of the Country. Manufacturing output has also been increasing, as has exports and our trade gap in June was the smallest for a year http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23630284.
Maybe not dramatic news, but a step in the right direction.

Some quick links FYI. Exchange rate moves are usually about relative momentum. The UK may be bust, but its getting a bit less bust. Thailand may be going to outstrip most countries for decades to come, but just now its slowing down a bit. How long this will all last is anyone's guess and its interesting to see everyone's views.

If you just want to check what rate you will receive, at that time, from an overseas bank transfer (TT) or at the local ATM the following web site is VERY good

A very interesting theory - I'd like to go with sub plot 1b - I don't doubt at all that Thailand can, and would, survive on its' own, and is simply paying lipservice to AEC directives while carrying on in its' own sweet way.oakdale160 wrote:Hard to say. Thias are the masters at passive-aggresive behaviour. What they are doing at AEC meetings, I hear, is not making a word of protest, they just ignore all the directives. In their defense their desire not to become part of 'greater Singapore" is understandable, but they don't do it by fighting the changes, they do it by ignoring them.
It could work, AEC like ASEAN could be a sham or it could be that Thai will be left behind, but then again that might suit the wealthy minority quite well.
There is a sub-plot. There is a theory that it is the Chinese S'porians, Chinese Malaysians, Chinese VNese etc who are pushing the union the hardest. There is also Sub plot 1b, which is that this is quite true and the reason they are doing it is to counteract the power of China.
But it would also make some sense for the Thai and other SEA Chinese peoples non resident in China to have a hidden agenda.
The Thai/Chinese, despite some ongoing mistrust of them from ordinary Thai people, hold a great deal of the countries' wealth. They have vested interests in Thailand, and many have been settled there for generations. But they left China originally for a reason. The advent of the AEC must be a turning point for them in deciding where their true allegiance lies.
Interesting times ahead.

I have a Thai-Chinese friend a man in his fifties. He was sent to school for 2 years and university for 3 years in Britain and has a charming English accent. His two children are now in University in China.
Re: GBP vs THB
interesting site, but it gives the bank note conversion rate, not the TT rate which people transferring money in would get.
I.e. for Kasikorn, the bank note rate is 49.31754 (as the site indicated), but the TT rate is 49.78375. And if you bring in more than a million then they sometimes seem to give you a better rate than that in my experience.
BTW, as I write this, the mid market rate (from xe.com) is 50.0204, so the Kasikorn TT rate is pretty good. not a big spread.

The one I gave 2 or 3 days ago enables you to check the TT and Cash rates?

The agony on this thread a few months ago has not been replaced. I think a little 'happy' talk or at least "this is better' talk is appropriate. $ at 32+, GBP at 50+

A surprising silence on the gradual rise of the pound, Euro and dollar against the baht. Are we all holding our breath and keeping our fingers crossed?
