Re: Snake bites
Hua Hin hospital has anti venom. You need to know what type of snake bit you.
Re: Snake bites
Yes in an ideal world you need to know the type of snake but not always possible ( Kill it, photo, description)heartofmidlothian wrote:Hua Hin hospital has anti venom. You need to know what type of snake bit you.
Believe snake season / breeding is here for the next few months. When the frogs come out after heavy rain snakes like to play! I had a small one in my back garden last week late evening. They prefer night time when cooler.
Lots of information on the net. Only a small percentage of people die from snake bites here and I guess most of these will be in the rice fields and forests etc!
A lot of bites do not puncture the skin. if this is the case you should be fine just infection? Most NOT all poisonous snakes are brightly coloured. They have bad eye sight and react by noise. Normally they only attack when threatened. My limited knowledge of snakes from the net!
In Hua Hin you have more chance of having a road traffic accident than a snake bite!

Re: Snake bites
What kind of snakes are common to Hua Hin?
In our 7 years here I recall 3 types of snake visiting our house - and being mostly kept at bay by our 2 great Thai dogs:
1. Cobra - we had 2, obviously very poisonous
2. A green snake climbing banana tree in garden - I think this is a garden snake from searching web and not poisonous
3. A small greyish snake which I think is a worm snake? Not poisonous, dogs killed it.

We've had Malayan Pit Vipers. These are not brightly coloured and can be hard to spot unless out in the open. Apparently they won't easily give ground like many other snakes. They kill more people in Thailand than any other snake. And they can jump, so be very careful about trying to catch them yourself. Plenty of info on the web, e.g. http://www.siam-info.com/english/snakes_crotalidae.html.

Re: Snake bites
I've seen a couple of these in my short time here in HH too. They have both been coiled up like the typical rattle snake images we all know from the movies and looking pretty mean. They don't move when approached and strike last minute so are the ones that I worry about. They were both seen on the dirt railway road between Soi 102 and 94 so are pretty close to populated area too!hhinner wrote:We've had Malayan Pit Vipers. Re: Snake bites
The only snake bites I have had so far were in the bar, boy do they give a kick!!
on a serious not though, we got rid of the banana trees in the garden as the cool shade seemed to attract snakes.

Re: Snake bites
Since living here in HH we've had quite a few snakes visiting, but the frequency has decreased a lot as more and more homes have sprung up around us. Personally I don't mind snakes at all and will gladly sit in the yard and watch one doing its thing, but having young kids about, the Malaysian Pit Vipers had to be sent to their special snake heaven in the sky. We've had a few cobras as well which were passing through, and on one occasion, it was fantastic to see and actually hear one in real life.
The Malaysian Pit Vipers honestly don't try to flee. I've almost stood on one and it didn't even budge. So far all the dangerous snakes that have come visiting have come at night, but our Rottweiler is awesome at spotting them or smelling them usually. We've also had several others, including a very good looking python a few weeks back, but the harmless ones seem to visit during the day.
As another poster has mentioned, the Malaysian Pit Vipers are public enemy number one in Thailand, and as far as I know, they cause about 70 deaths each year. Saying that, not all bites result in a fatality, but kids are obviously vulnerable.
To be honest, I'm more concerned about the damn centipede. They might not kill you, but I've been told you REALLY don't want one to bite you.
Anyway, your question has already been answered in earlier replies - Hua-Hin Hospital has anti venom.

Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
Re: Snake bites
From what I've read/heard, other than the Malayan pit viper, most snakes will, given the chance, flee rather than fight a human. If you don't cage them in/block their exit, they will make an escape at their earliest convenience. That assumes, of course, that you know they are there. All of my encounters with snakes have been up close and personal since I didn't see them until I was almost face to face with them. Still, I have never been attacked.
Adult cobras can meter the amount of venom they inject with they bite, and can in fact do "dry bites" with no venom. When dealing with humans, and not in a fight for their life, they generally issue a warning bite with little/no venom. If you are swinging at them with a garden hoe, all bets are off. Adolescent cobras are dangerous since they are big enough to make a solid bite, but have not yet developed the ability to meter their venom, and inject a full dose with every bite.
If you plan to walk through tall weeds/grass, make as much noise as you can, like by stomping your feet. That alerts the snakes to your presence and gives them a chance to flee before you get close.

Re: Snake bites
Had a 6 foot (HHadfans estimate) copper headed rat snake decide to drop in from my veranda roof for a chat
As i have had two teeth extracted and a filling i was unfortunately not in the mood to banter, it decided to bite/ strike at me twice so i hit it with a piece of 4x2 on the cranium and it then left.
be on the lookout for a very pretty 6 ft snake with an attitude problem
Had i known it was non venomous i would have guided it with the 4x2 but in my defense it did a GW Bush on me with a preemptive strike and suffered the consequences
