Thai Restaurant Certification/Cleanliness Sign

Post by PeteC »

Inspired by the OTOP thread.

Many years ago the government instituted a restaurant certification process. It was partly awarded for food quality, but the primary purpose I think was to certify cleanliness and food safety. These restaurants had/have a silver bowl symbol on a white background sign at their entrance. I can't find a photo of one...please post if you can find one.

I'm wondering if this program is still managed by the government, or it has passed into history and any of these signs that may still be present are just relics. Pete

Wasn't there also a sign that was something like a cartoon image of a chef on a blue and green background that was something to do with this?

I see that now in some articles but that seems to be some kind of new symbol. The silver bowl deal goes back to the early/mid 90's per my memory. Maybe the "cartoon" replaced the bowl...I don't know. Pete

I've seen a sign saying something like 'good clean food' at several restaurants/eateries. If I see one again, I'll take a photo.

Hi Pete,

It sounds like you're talking about the 'clean food good taste' sign.

If you have or are opening a restaurant, the local tessa baan encourages you to attend a 1-day "course" on food hygiene.
You are then issued with the 'clean food good taste' sign - however, at no point before or after is the restaurant visited or inspected to see if these pearls of wisdom have been complied with.

Thanks Barry. When back I'm going to see if I can find one of the old silver bowl signs. I'm pretty sure now that this new symbol/sign has replaced that one. Pete

The Tessaban DID inspect our restuarant & kitchen before we were awarded the sign above.
My wife now informs me that the man within the Tessaban that primarily launched this scheme has 'moved on' & the 'scheme' seems to have gone with him..?

A friend of mine got one last year for his restaurant in Takiab. There certainly wasn't a course involved. A group from the Tessabahn arrived unanounced to inspect his kitchen. He was in the process of installing a fat filter so the came back a couple of days later and he was awarded the certificate. The pain in the a**e was that he had to attend an award ceremony (all in Thai of course)
