Oh something a little amazing that happened to me..............
I hooked into a large Simese Carp and done battle with said fish for around 20, minuits in my over excitement i let the rod down to low and the line went over the top of the rod breaking the fish off.
Half hour later these German guys where fishing around the right hand side on the raised bank, one of them hooked in to a large fish after half an hour the fish was landed with the help of the bait man with a landing net.
A couple of minuits went by and they all started roaring with laughter waving at me like i was being summoned, so i walked around to them and believe me or not the guy did not hook the fish he hooked my metal spring bait feeder that i had broken off earlier.
After a few photos and lots of smug banter i was handed back the bait feeder an walked away some what envious but i would not show that to zee Germans.

I have also seen a really elderly gentleman catch an Alligator Gar from the other lake he was insistent that he wanted his photo taken with it so the bait man cut the line with a ciggy leaving the hook attached wrapped a rag around its very long chops for the photo but this old man was not even strong enough to hold it for a photo as it was trying to make a break for freedom.

We have fished at the lodge the same amount of times, if I come over in October that gives you another five months to craft your skills :D
As I have said before my personal best before going to the lodge was a 2 kg bass always loved fishing just was not really good or lucky at it. :o
But I blame the Solent and Southampton water myself :D

 Aw, come on Terry - don't do yourself down, even the tiddlers that I've been getting are larger than 5Kg. Your man (although probably trying to inflate my ego) put my biggest this week at 15Kg. Plenty big enough for me, but now that I'm back to full strength, I'm ready to tackle something a little bigger - 30 to 35Kg would do nicely.

OK BB - I guess that I should be a little more kind...............

Anyway - you might have to venture to the grown up's pond if you are after those sizes. Here they reach 60+ Kg

The fish in the top pond max out at about 25 Kg.

Frankly, I've always thought that a 20Kg Giant Siamese Carp or Giant Mekong Catfish in this climate is enough exercise for one day

I'll stick with the baby pond. You know my opinion watching the big boys coming in. Give me a nice catfish, or a slimeball any day - they know how to scrap.

The other day, my guys finally got round to cleaning out the ornamental pond. :D

There was about a foot (30cm) of fish poo in the bottom...............nice :tsk:

Anyway - now we can see the Koi Carp, and the Giant Gourami (Amongst many others) that we have in there. 8)

^ Can you give a brief summary Terry on how they did that? Mine is only about 1.5 x 1.5 meters with 3 large koi in it and I try to do it without taking the fish out due to their size and no place to put them. It's a huge mess using a submersible pump, pool skimmer nets and at the end of the day if it's 70% clean on the bottom we consider ourselves lucky. Someone needs to invent a small poo vacuum similar to a swimming pool vacuum. Your pond looks remarkably clean given the size and quantity of fish. Pete

The poo vacuum is something that I'm working on Pete - but don't have the time right now - if you find something let me know, I would be interested

We normally clean out the ornamental pond around every 3 - 4 months but for various reasons, it did not get done for almost a year

Our procedure is

1) Agitate the poo so that it is in suspension.
2) Two submersibles into the pond and drain down.
3) When about 2ft deep, start netting the fish and put them into a large plastic tank that is 50% full of pond water and 50% fresh from the well.
4) The plastic tank has a compressed air supply bubbling out all the time the fish are in the tank
5) Wallpaper scrapers and wire brushes are used to clean the sides and bottom of the ornamental pond.
6) During the whole process there is always a fresh supply of water to the pond from the well.
7) Refill the pond with clean well water and around 20% pumped across from our adjacent top fishing pond.

Reintroduce the fish
Voila!

Thanks. The only things I'm lacking is a net big enough to pick them up, and the plastic container to put them into. We try to clean around them with about 18" of water remaining in the pond. It stresses them out pretty badly though. If the pond was close enough to the pool, I'd try the pool system and vacuum to waste avoiding the filter. I may have some pretty stinky pipes and hoses for a few days though. Will keep my eyes open for some kind of specialty vacuum. Pete

Thinking about this more, for a pond your size it shouldn't be difficult to use a normal pool pump. All a pool vacuum system is, is a PVC pipe going from the pool to the pump, then the water either through your filter to return to the pool, or to waste.

You could get a used pump, size up to you: (HP, Watts, L/min) 3/4-550-150, 1-750-210, 1.25-1100-275....up to 2HP I think. Bolt it to a plank for stability, put a normal plug on it and hook to the electrical connection needed, use a normal swimming pool flexible hose and vacuum head for the in water work, attach a waste hose to the tail end of the pump for waste disposal to the garden or lawn.

In theory it should work. Pete
