Strange MasterCard receipt, or?

Post by ejorris »

I'm rather frequent in using my credit cards in hotels and larger restaurants, but was a bit concerned this morning when I glanced at a receipt from Somerset Lakepoint Hotel in Bangkok where we stayed for a few days. Normally the receipt looks has something like:

ICC: ************1234
M/C Card: **/**

But on this one the complete number and date was printed in clear with my name on it? This was a receipt from the SCB Bank. I have another receipt from a similar one which has the "****".

This is a bit scary since that is all you need to use the card. Anyone more noticed this?

My guess is that you received the "Merchant Copy" which has the complete number on it. The Merchant keeps this copy for their records. (This is common around the globe) The customer Copy has only the last four digits. In case they just throw it away or forget it. They always print two receipts. One has the complete number, one does not. No worries, for you or the Merchant IMO.
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

When I was in the Netherlands a while ago this seemed to be the norm with the complete number on the receipt and now I check regardless of where I am in the world. It always pays to check on your credit card balances online if you can as you never know who will get hold of your number. Every time you use the card and a receipt is printed your number is on some piece of paper that an unscrupulous restauranteur or shop assistant can note down.
