SteveG, I normally agree with most of your short, but to the point, posts. The one you made above must be one of the biggest stereotypes that there are going with a sprinkle of sweeping generalizations.

For the oldies amongst us.. believe it or not you can experience Samui for a whole weekend without some guy asking you about the meaning of life during an LSD trip, or some guy offering you to share a joint in the hut.... On Samui there aren't guys just wandering about fucked off their face during the day... if you go to the right places 8) in the evening (early morning for you old folk) you can get it if you want to just like if I want to smoke crack in Hua Hin I can. It's not set on a plate for you wherever you go and if ya up that late to experience it maybe ya need to look in the mirror and let HIM judge where you're at in the 'ladder of acceptable'.

I guess that image for the three islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan comes from the full moon parties and the diving new-age hippy lot that flock there as if it's a mecca of some sort.

Samui is big enough to have a fairly wide variety of tourists......just. Koh Phangan, especially Haad Rin, definitely does deserve it's reputation and the previous poster's comment is 'bang-on' regarding there.

There are untold amounts of reports in all manner of publications about the excesses of tourists and the involvement of recreational pharmaceuticals on these islands, especially on the full moon party beaches.

So, with hindsight, Steve's comment is not exactly too far beyond the realms of reality....although Samui definitely has two sides to it as you mention.

Yes, so much illegal narcotics are sold there that the island has even had problems with international level organised crime gangs.

Can't really comment on the drug situation on the islands, but of all the times I've been to full moon parties, I was not once offered any drugs at all. I did however smell grass on a few occasions, but depending what country you come from, young adults smoking joints is hardly a major crime.

Actually, I thoroughly enjoyed the full moon parties I've been to. Personally I don't think the drug problem is any worse on the islands than it is elsewhere. By comparison, I can't recall ever not being offered drugs when frequenting nightclubs in Aberdeen.

Anyway, each to his own.

Lived on Samui for 5 years. The stuff that the mafia get up to is alarming. Saw several shootings during my 5 year stay. Like anywhere you can find trouble if you look for it. Piss any of the locals off enough and you will know about it. The island is generally safe if you are sensible.
