AIS+ ZTE MF30. Slow connection. Just 3G (384 kbps)

Post by Cityman »

Hello people,
Can somebody give me some advice about the AIS operator?
I just read the information, that AIS offer 7GB on hi speed with reduce speed to 384kbps after 7GB will reach.
We use ZTE MF30 mifi router (from AIS).
But I've never see any normal speed. Never seen 21 mbps (I can understand it, it is working in TOT 3G coverage only. Only in few places, in the center of city), never seen 7,2 or 3,6. So I've never seen and 1mbps :)
Since of first day, than I've activated packet for 999 bath we've just seen 384kbps maximum speed. Signal to the network is strong 80...90% (-57....-63db).
What is wrong? May be MF30 doesn't work correctly? Or may be HSDPA doesn't work in AIS network here in HH?
We are living at SportVilla area, in townhouse.
Any ideas?
Thx!

3G coverage is patchy to say the lease in Hua Hin.

I had a lot of problems with AIS. I bought a 3G SIM card and it would only connect on EDGE regardless of where I was and what device I was using it in.

My only recommendation is to get yourself a DTAC Happy SIM card. That's what I had to do!

Router has detected 3G, not EDGE.
But connection speed just 384kbps, that mean uses the WCDMA protocol (which can give up to 384kbps only ), but not the HSDPA (up to 21 mbps).

Hi Cityman,

I have a feeling the answer might be that the MiFi device you have only operates 3G on the 2100MHz frequency... and that is runs GPRS/EDGE on 850/900/1800MHz.

AIS' 3G service only runs on 900MHz. Stick your sim card in something like a Galaxy phone and you'll probably see 3G, unless it's specifically compatible with that MiFi device or something.

Then stick a TrueMove sim card with a 3G plan on it into your MiFi and it'll probably work. Mayb Dtac are compatible too but not sure, and True are better anyway imo.

I'm really not sure on this though as only just had a quick read, so check it out before spending money based on what I think.

Good luck, if you want try a TrueMove 3G sim in it I'll be outside Cat Bar in about 20mins. Leo.

Correct!! AIS use WCDMA not HSDPA, from the AIS website... "For example, if a customer has a mobile phone that operates on the 2100 MHz or 850 MHz frequencies, it cannot be used with the AIS 3G network. AIS 3G only supports the 900 MHz frequency. Moreover, 2G mobiles cannot be used with the AIS 3G network as the systems are different. Customers should choose a 3G mobile phone that is compatible with the 3G WCDMA system on the 900 MHz frequency".

The funny thing talking about all this is I have not got a single clue what any of this actually means, what it does or even what these initials stand for :D

So.... Today I checked up my MF30 outdoor thought my iPhone 3GS.
Results: AIS coverage in HuaHin really patched.
I've got results from 100 kbps on Petchkasem, near of Marakesh to 4mbps in near of traffic-light in the center. I've continued with experiments, until found that signal in one of bedrooms better and stronger, then in another. This room's, on the second floor, window exits to the south and speedtest.net have got ~2mbps signal.
So, I just powered on my router with long USB cable and put it outdoor.
Now my laptop in that room and works like WIFI access point for another, my wife's laptop, ipad and two iPhones.

BUT! Forget about any 7.2.....21 or 42 mbps. You can't get it here, in HuaHin.

That's testing it to Bangkok, its an intranet so naturally you're going to get full speed. Real tests should be done to the US or UK at peak times using a full range of criteria including DNS look up and traceroutes, then you'll get something vastly different!

Edit: the biggest problem with internet speeds in Thailand is DNS, actual website retrieval and streaming, not so much file downloading. This is because everything is filtered and the ICT are spending millions developing a China-like firewall.

I configure my computer to use Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) so that speeds it up somewhat on my end, though of course it's also being filtered on the ISP side of things.
