LAWN BOWLING CLUB COMING SOON TO HUA HIN

Fraid not GLC, only a few hundred never more!
Re: LAWN BOWLING CLUB COMING SOON TO HUA HIN
I can see it being good for Thai partners as well as it's something that doesn't take a huge amount of explaining of rules or exotic equipment or anything like that. I understand it takes a lot of skill to play well but if everyone is at the same level, you can just play for a bit of fun.
Re: LAWN BOWLING CLUB COMING SOON TO HUA HIN
Seriously though, it is a game of skill and no doubt enjoyable to play. In any case it gets people out and away from the telly or computer.
Unfortunately it does evoke images of geriatrics pissed on Pimm's wheezing around in their whites.
Bottom line: if it was good enough for Francis Drake it can't be all bad

Members and guests can also enjoy all the other resort facilities including swimming pool and tennis.
This is not crown green or the currently available ten-pin bowling.
Any feedback or interest will be gratefully accepted.
Also, we will be looking for additional lawn bowling equipment for visitors.
Anyone with any questions, comments, advice is welcome
So where is this resort and when will the 'green' be ready?

Please enlighten me. I would imagine they would find it extremely difficult to hold an umbrella, a mobile phone, and role their ball at the same time.

That would be Petanque/Boules they are playing usually utilizing stainless steel balls, there is already a club for this on the Pala U road before you go up the hill going out of townGLCQuantum wrote:I see a lot of Thai's play a type of bowls on the sand. Rather than rolling it they throw it as close to the target as possible. There are places dotted all over Bangkok with them playing. Competition days held in some temples can get quite rowdy! Looks like fun anyway.
I'm sure many Thai's would like to give lawn bowls a shot.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, will let you know in advance of opening more info. It's good you have your own bowls as not easy to find in Thailand, best regards, Leesjpthsuk wrote:sign me up for when i'm here, was considering building an all-weather full size rink for retirement but if there is a green here i'll head down a few days per week - i have a couple of set of bowls with me (Taylor internationals and Drakes Pride both 5Heavy's).
Have played extensively back in the UK but not seriously the past 10years, did play a few games when lived in Pattaya, and the wife and myself played down in Phuket. Because there is no bowls here i ended up playing golf, but bowls is better crack if there is competitions on the go.

Thank you members for your great response.
Just have to decide on the surface for the green.
Do we go real grass or artificial, thoughts please.
I think an artificial surface will be more beneficial but not sure! ??

Lawn bowls is not an old mans game anymore , the average age of the Australian team is 30 male and female. There was a movie out 10 years ago called Cracker Jack , it turned lawn bowls clubs around Australia into the happening place with cheap beer and food , live bands and thats where bare foot bowls came in on a Friday night or Sunday night , after that they got ride of the traditional whites and introduced colours .
Artificial lawn is popular in West Australia due to cost and maintanance of the greens and we have water restrictions here also , so lawn bowls in Hua Hin its a yes from me .

Re: LAWN BOWLING CLUB COMING SOON TO HUA HIN
I'd suggest artificial - there is a crowd in Bangkok that supply a new-zealand manufacturer (Tiger-????) and they will give you advice on the construction of the base also - i've details and prices of all that as i mentioned earlier i was considering doing this but my work commitments are too busy at present - drainage is your main area and that will take time and effort to get into the concrete slab you will need below it.
The issues with grass out here is where you will struggle to find the right type, then it's a chore to maintain, having helped out maintain a green back in the UK, scarifying and hollow tinning are a must to keep the green aereated, water at nightimes not during the day or the grass will burn-up, rolling it every now and again, and off-course cutting needs to be done diagonally both ways then round the edges to square things up (every 2nd/3rd day max)
At times you'll get lowspots and these need to be dressed. Moss (and other weeds) can kill the green, and remember not to fill the lawnmower on the green or you'll kill the grass if the petrol (or gasoline) spills onto it. Ah yes a lawnmower that is a very pricey piece of equipment - not sure if you'll get the quality ones here you see back in the UK.
You'll also find that depending on the expertise/skills of the people young or old, if they are not delivering the bowls correctly it will kill the heads in no time requiring extensive repairs.
Hope i haven't frightened you off, but if you want to chat more send me a PM - i'll be home from my work in Canada at the weekend for a week before i head off to a new job in South Korea.
Cheers

I would imagine you would have to use a reel type mower instead of a rotary, right? Pete

I assume by "reel" you mean cylinder - typically in the UK a good quality cylinder mower will have 7 or more cutting blades, although the cheaper versions normally make do with 5. The more blades the finer the cut and a heavy roller will help produce the stripes that you see at events such as opening day at Wimbledon.prcscct wrote:I would imagine you would have to use a reel type mower instead of a rotary, right?
