Kayaking in and around Hau Hin area ?

So what is going on around here and where does it happen? This section is for discussion on local events, festivals, and holidays as well as activities and things to do.

Kayaking in and around Hau Hin area ?

Post by Pundi64 »

Are there any "Kayakers" living in the area of Hau Hin? Sometime in the not so far off future, we will be moving to Hau Hin area, and I would like to find people who are interested in ocean kayaking.
I would like to hear about the area and where there are good places to paddle, also to get to know you all.
Oh forgot my name , it is Dan, I am a frang married to a Thai woman, and will be moving from California.

A paddling friend,
Dan

Welcome to the board Dan,
Not sure about Kayaking although I know you can rent them from a few of the guesthouses on the seafront. Khao Takiab looks quite good to paddle around although I've never done it myself, may want to check the Observer Classifieds as I've seen Kayaks and equipment for sale in there before.

Cheers

Hi Dan,
I'm just back from Hua Hin and although I'm not keen on watersports, I did go kayaking with my wife. We went to the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park on an arranged excursion. (I think the river was Khao Daeng river)

I don't know if there are any groups in Hua Hin but I did notice that a mountain bike shop I went to regularly had kayak trip details and hire prices on their noticeboard. The shop is Hua Hin Bike on Phetchkasem Road. For directions to it see www.geocities.com/cpmacphee.

Hope this helps.

regards,
Calum

Hi Dan,
don't know I'd go so far as to call it a web site! I just threw together a few pictures and notes to give directions to Rosso (another poster) on how to find Hua Hin Bikes.

Calum

Hi Dan - welcome aboard - we went canoeing couple of years ago with kayaks hired from Dolphin Bay Resort - there are a couple small islands not too far offshore to investigate. DBR advertise in the Observer.

If you want to buy one, than a cheap 2 person kayak will cost about 8,000 thai price.
A good one, a dolphin or nomad single cost about 17,000 with paddle.
They are phuket prices so maybe less up here. or more.
Secondhand ones aren't much cheaper but you might be lucky if you buy from a foreigner. I did look at one buggered one from a jesus freak foreigner who was telling me god sent him to thiland to spread the word.
That kayak faded and so scratched and really was about 8,000 when new.
He wanted 14,000. I laughed. Did god send you to rip other foreigners off as well.

Has anyone paddled out to those two islands off Hau Hin, they look to be about 4-5 kilos out?

There is a Mangrove Swamp on the way to Phetburi that offers kayaking. I didn't do it myself but the scenery was amazing. There should be signs directing you to it near the main road.

Though where to buy a kayak??

Post by brandonaudia »

I read this post and asked myself, sure there are places "To Go" kayaking... but I have found it impossible to buy a kayak for under 20,000 baht. If anyone knows where to buy a new/used/built kayak it would be much appreciated. I live in Hua-Hin, but am willing to go the distance seeing as that I have been searching for 3 months now.

Thanks alot,

Brandon

Brandon, I used to do a lot of Kayaking years ago at school and wouldn’t mind having another go at it. The only one’s I’ve seen around Hue Hin are the sit-on type and these seem a bit over priced for Thailand at 35,000 bt and upwards.
A few weeks ago I was driving between Bangkok and Petchaburi when I spotted the same type of thing, but made out of moulded plastic, sitting outside one of those places that sells water barrels etc. I didn’t have time to stop but it looked like it would be much cheaper than 35,000 bt.
I think if you wanted anything more serious you would have to import it; I was looking at folding Kayaks in Germany recently but they were very expensive; the advantage would be that you could fly with it as luggage.

Kayaking in and around Hua Hin area

An alternative is to build one yourself. You don't have to be a skilled carpenter to produce a very acceptable boat, and there are hundreds of designs available through the internet. I started building boats last year and am now on my third one. I'm sure you could get started with a small kayak for less than 5,000 baht.
Anyone interested who would like to ask me more about locally sourcing plans, materials, tools, etc., feel free to contact me off-forum at deekinthailand@yahoo.co.uk.[/img]
