Hi I don't know what a GPS map is, but the best maps are Thai military maps which cover province by province and have every road down to that less trodden buffalo trail. You can buy them in Bangkok. Just down the road from the large naval base in BKK is a ministry of something and they can be bought here, you may need a translator these maps are hard to find but have everything on them if you are traveling off the beaten track

I assume you are looking for more accurate waypoint data ?

If so do a google search you will find at least 10 different resources there.

ArcInfo are usually fairly good but the choice is yours.

Not everyone can purchase those military maps, also many are restricted from public use. Depending on the amount of detail, you may be interested in a hard copy map 1:350,000 scale with 1:20,000 scale for Bangkok and major cities. This is advertised as 'GPS compatible' and at 950 baht (I actually paid less) is value for money. It's called the Thailand Atlas, published by Lotus Image, www.Lotusimage.com.

Alternatively, the GARMIN agent here in Thailand (ESRI Thailand Co Ltd) could provide you with the data in 1:20,000 and/or 1:4,000 scale. I would not know how much that would cost, and I think it is in Thai.
Their website is also mainly in Thai. (www.esrith.com)

Hai Vincent.
I have been on the site of esrith before, but they [garmin] have no map for Thailand yet.
Hard copy maps you have to scan in,than transfer into a format mapsource can read, before you can upload them in to your handheld GPS[in my case a Etrex vista].
This takes a lot of time, and me being lazy,I gave it a shot on this forum ,in the hope that somebody already played around with it
But thanks for your reaction.

GPS & Garmin

Use Garmin Pacific Blue Chart, region 3, Asia East, unlock South China Sea area reference number MAE0004R, this is about as good as it gets for GPS mapping of Thailand. There should be updates later I'm sure.

GPS and Waypoints

Post by Moto Guzzi Bob »

Being new I'm still looking around and just spotted this question. In addition to the excellent response try this site for waypoints

http://www.indexmundi.com/zp/th/#M

This is for Thailand and is very comprehensive, but you can, of course drop the /th etc. for other countries. For those of you who are considering a handheld GPS, I have used Magellan (in a car). They have a good world wide CD Rom (Map Send) and had loads of success travelling all over Thailand - even getting me out of a pickle in Bangkok! It does not have the detail of the US/ Europe CD Rom's, but all you need is a decent map and use the two together.

Good luck with discovery of Thailand

Any new about mapping of Thailand?

Post by Frode »

I've just bought a Medion GPS (navigation system for car) and was wondering if there are any maps of Thailand for sale. I've been searching internet but no results. Do you know if there is any shops in Hua Hin selling navigation systems for cars so I can ask them?

As far as I know there are no commercial GPS maps available yet, but I have seen a road atlas with WGS 84 format coordinates, which you can use with some GPS systems.

I have read that the 2006 Toyota Camary and all the Lexus models sold here come standard with GPS and that there is some kind of Thai highway software loaded into them. No idea how good it is or if it is a Toyota exclusive, or commercially available elsewhere. Maybe visit a few Toyota showrooms and ask. Pete
