Bicycle wanted

Post by Mr-Zedd »

Just arrived here in Hua Hin and plan to stay for 4-5 weeks.

I would like to purchase a used bicycle to get around since Hua Hin is so flat and I will be living near the airport.

A variable gear bike would be nice (3-7 gears) anything else would be overkill I think.

I looked on the Classifieds Hua Hin forum but nothing for sale there.

Or if someone knows of a place here in Hua Hin that sells used bikes that would be OK too.

Thanks!

Well Zedd, welcome to the forum, but if you manage to find one then it's also probably worth giving some thought to all the generic indigenous hazards that come along with this activity.

Examples:
Angry dogs chasing you
Farcical local road users that shouldn't be near anything that resembles a vehicle

Cycling tends to be a dangerous pastime here in general.

Just jesting dude......good luck but be super careful. :thumb:

Welcome Mr Zed. Hua-Hin bikes on the main road just opposite the Shell filling station usually has a few good secondhand bikes for sale. Also, if you live near the airport, you'll see a used car dealer ship on your left if you head towards Hua-Hin, and they have a bunch of secondhand bikes standing out front. Hua-Hin Bikes is a good bet though, and the service is first class.

As someone has already pointed out, you really have to be careful on the roads here, but to be honest, I feel safer on my bicycle than I do on a motorbike or in a car. Thai drivers may drive a bit crazy, but they have an inbuilt awareness for strange oddities appearing on the roads, and slow travelling things such as bicycles. I have found the vast majority are very considerate towards cyclists.

Enjoy yourself.

Hello everyone, thanks for the info.

I will contact both the T+D guy and also take a look at the Hua Hin bikes near the Shell station.

I'll take heed to your warnings about the crazy drivers here. I have driven here on a motorcycle for several weeks at a time during my last few visits, but since I will be living out near the west end of Sol 6 in one of those gated communities I really wanted the bike just to go into the village near the highway to buy some tasty food and use the interenet. Its a bit too far to walk. There doesnt seem to be too much traffics on those minor roads.

So most of my cycling will be on the outskirts of town.

Although I might try to come into Hua Hin proper once a week or so but probably use the smaller back roads where there is less traffic.

Thanks for all you help.

Mr Zedd, just a small tip..........If you go through to Hua-Hin town on your bike from soi 6, you'll find the main road is much easier and a lot safer than the klong road. I go from soi 6 to Hua-Hin town frequently, and always use the main road now rather than the klong road. Saying that, the klong road is great if you want to go for a ride heading north from soi 6 and from what I've been told, you can go all the way to Cha-Am now.

Hi Takiap

Thanks for the info. Will take note when i finally get a bike.

Thank you "apinansukpeng" for the info on your bike, but I think your bike is over my price range. I am just looking for a simple 1 speed Thai style bike with a basket in front to carry food from the village nearby.

As with al things the amount you pay will reflect in the quality of the bike. Cheap Chinese bikes are built to low standards for smaller lighter people and do not last long. Better to pay a bit more for something that will the average foreigner who tends to have a bigger build than most Thai's. Getting a more capable bike offers the chance to expand your horizons. My 72 year old neighbour rides to Pala U and back some days so you are never too old to enjoy cycling although he may be a more extreme case. I agree with the other posters about Hua Hin bikes being a good source.
Whether you go along the cheap or more expensive route you know there are people on the forum who will always try to answer questions. I wish you success in your search and you will be sure to get a wave or greeting from other cyclists you encounter.
