Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
That does seem expensive even for first class and about the same average price you would pay for a taxi that would accommodate at least three passengers and save you more than an hours travel time and direct to wherever you are going.
Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
We've done the trip by train quite a few times and have never been able to get 1st class tickets - we assumed this was because it was a sleeper train and all the 1st class cabins (which are then converted into 2 bunks) seem to go quite early and for the entire journey.
2nd is comfortable seat wise, but there is no aircon just fans and the main thing I've found is getting grubby from fumes and smoke from fires near the track etc. Would recommend taking some face wipes and also some antibacterial hand wash for the aforementioned toilets - by the way - the western style toilets in 1st class are much worse than the 2nd class metal squatters in terms of hygiene - that's based on a few 1st class sleeper trips between Bangkok and the North.
Cheers all.

Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
@Pleng - the last time I took a taxi from the Southern Bus Terminal to Sukhumvit Soi 8 it only went over 100 baht because of the need to turn round at Asoke, so 300+ is way over IMHO.
@OP - the buses from Hua Hin to Southern Bus Terminal go from outside an office on SraSong road, just south of the intersection of SraSong with the street holding the night market. It may be obscured by vans as there is a newish van service also leaving from that location.
Buses from the terminal in Hua Hin opposite the Interconti only go south with (apparently) the exception of the bus from Ranong to Korat which goes over Mo Chit station in Bangkok. It may be worth looking at that one too.

Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

Thought it might be useful if I report that I got a train from Hua Hin to Bangkok on Thursday morning at 06.30. Cost 152 Baht and was a "rapid" train with a reserved seat and the journey took exactly 4 hours.

Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
Bernard, what type of carriage were you in - 2nd class with fan or air? 4 hours seems pretty good going and if it was a reliable service, would offer a good alternative to the big buses at not much more time and a lot safer than the quicker but dangerous mini-buses.Bernard wrote:Thought it might be useful if I report that I got a train from Hua Hin to Bangkok on Thursday morning at 06.30. Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
It was a second class carriage with Fans. All the windows were open so it was nice and airy and the seats faced forward similar to a bus so I didn't have anyone facing me. Smooth trip and I would certainly do it again.
Re: Train from Hua Hin to Bangkok
I travelled from Bangkok to Hua Hin some years ago by the 09:25 train.
Windows open etc. Diesel fumes coming in the windows.
Hands and face black from the fumes and the dirt flying about. Bad taste in my mouth. Not good.
Suggest face mask and hand wipes especially if you intend to eat a sandwich or whatever.

Don't know what year that was 100B from Sai Dtai to Soi 8??? 250-300 is more like it by taxi.Korkenzieher wrote:@Pleng - the last time I took a taxi from the Southern Bus Terminal to Sukhumvit Soi 8 it only went over 100 baht because of the need to turn round at Asoke, so 300+ is way over IMHO.

I always go by big bus to BKK.
It is always a 100 Baht taxi ride from Southern Bus Terminal just to Wongwian Yai BTS station on that side of the river. Wongwian Yai is also the nearest BTS station to Sai Dtai. Maybe 40 Baht on BTS to Nana station next to Soi 8.
